HP LTO-4 1840 Drive Delivers Efficient Data Compression
Compression algorithms depend on redundancy. This redundancy is removed by the data encryption mechanism of HP LTO4 tape drive which efficiently scrambles the data. It is very essential that in tape based encryption the data should be compressed before the performing the data encryption. Otherwise the media cost may increase because the information will not be compressed and more tape will be required for each backup. This will result in longer tape length. HP has devised a solution to this problem which has been implemented in the 1840 LTO-4 tape drives. In HP LTO-4 tape drive, the hardware compression is implemented before the data encryption. This encryption technique used by HP 1840 tape drive increases the overall efficiency and ensures high level of data reliability.
HP LTO-4 drive’s encryption mechanism does not affect the performance of backup system and tape drive. Innovative feature is added in HP 1840 tape drive that mitigates any mismatch between the backup server and tape drive’s performance. When the backup sever is unable to continuously stream the information to the drive, then the drive has to stop so that it can reposition it self and then start again. This is called shoe-shining. Shoe shining is a common problem occurred in the other tape drive formats. Hewlett-Packard has developed a solution to this problem and has incorporated DRM (data rate matching) technology in LTO-4 1840 tape drive. Large buffers are incorporated in the HP 1840 tape drive which assists it to make adjustments to their internal speed and transfer speed so that they can match the host system.
DRM feature helps the HP tape drive to dynamically adjust its tape speed from 40 to 120 MB/second. HP LTO-4 drive offers superior server compatibility with all the non-HP and HP servers which includes the leading platform from Sun, IBM and Dell. Software compatibility of HP 1840 LTO-4 is also exceptional supporting the archiving & backup applications from VERITAS, Tivoli, Legato, CA, HP and many more. HP LTO4 tape drive supports the WORM tape media. This support for WORM tape media is very useful in satisfying Sarbanes-Oxley, HIPAA, SEC-17A-4 and other compliance regulations.

What's the biggest compatible hard drive I can get for these specs of a computer?
It's a Hewlett Packard Pavilion with an AMD K6 333 MHz processor, 288 MB SDRAM with Windows 98 OS. Why would I waste the money for a new hard drive on such an old computer you ask? Because the software I want to work with is only compatible with Windows 95/98. I tried two different methods to make them work on a Windows XP based computer, but no dice. It would most definitely cost me more to get the same software compatible with my newest PC than to get a medium-sized hard drive. It currently has a 3.1 GB hard drive but I'm seriously running out of space. I'd prefer internal to external, but whatever is compatible I guess. Thanks for any info.
because you are running windows 98, your harddrives must be formatted to fat16 (file alocation table 16 bit) . a fat16 format can only utilize 32 gigs. most hard drives will work. some hard drives larger than 32 gigs wont work. windows 98 only supports usb 1.0 and 1.1, which is slow, so an external drive would suck.
