Michael Jackson: This Is It List Price: $19.94 Sale Price: $1.50 |
|
Michael Jackson's This Is It is a rare, behind-the-scenes look at the performer as he developed, created, and rehearsed for his sold-out concerts at London's O2 arena. Chronicling the months from April through June 2009, this film was produced with the full support of Michael Jackson's estate. The movie draws from more than 100 hours of behind-the-scenes footage, and features Jackson rehearsing a number of his songs for the show. In raw and candid detail, This Is It captures the singer, dancer, filmmaker, architect, creative genius, and great artist at work as he develops and perfects the planned London shows. The DVD features an anamorphic widescreen transfer of the film, complemented with a Dolby Digital 5.1 audio track. Bonus materials include two documentaries on the making of This Is It, along with the featurettes "The Gloved One" and "Costumes." Also included are "Memories of Michael" and "Auditions: Searching for the World's Best Dancers." It's hard not to watch This Is It without feeling a mixture of sorrow and elation. When he passed away in the summer of 2009, Michael Jackson was in the midst of rehearsals for his final tour, an ambitious 50-date engagement. In editing 120 hours of rehearsal footage together, Jackson producer Kenny Ortega proves that it would've been an event for the ages. Michael performs material that spans his career, from a Motown medley to multi-platinum hits from Off the Wall, Thriller, and Bad. Though he hadn't toured in 10 years, it becomes instantly apparent, despite rumors to the contrary, that Jackson was still in full possession of that unmistakable voice--high-pitched whoops and all--and that he still had the gravity-defying moves of a man half his age. Jackson and Ortega also collaborated on some real showstoppers, such as a graveyard-set "Thriller"; an imposing "They Don't Care About Us," in which several dancers appear to morph into thousands; and a film noir sequence in which the singer slides in and out of Gilda and other black-and-white classics, singing "Smooth Criminal" all the while. Not everything works, like the Jackson 5 numbers, in which he flubs a few lyrics, claiming that his earpiece isn't working properly, but as he readily acknowledges, "That's what rehearsal is for." It's a tragedy that he didn't get the chance to share this dazzling show with the world, but Ortega allows fans to feel as if it actually happened--at least onscreen. --Kathleen C. Make Yourself List Price: $7.99 Sale Price: $4.69 |
|
Young, aggro, and from Los Angeles--it's tempting to put Incubus in the already crowded category populated by Korn, System of a Down, and their other loud and heavy brethren. But that would sell Incubus short, because Make Yourself, the quintet's sophomore album, is a strong progression beyond their 1997 debut, S.C.I.E.N.C.E.. More like Faith No More than Limp Bizkit, Incubus still have that teen-mosh appeal, though the songwriting and instrumentation on Make Yourself is diverse and thoughtful, both lyrically and musically. "Drive" is an easygoing, slightly trippy acoustic-based outing, while oddball scratching (courtesy of DJ Chris Kilmore) and trip-hop funkiness make "Battlestar Scralatchtica" aptly titled. "Nowhere Fast" is vaguely 311-ish with a reggae tinge and lovely melodic interludes, in contrast to the furious intensity of "Out from Under," which gives Make Yourself a surprisingly cohesive diversity that's hard to categorize. Ultimately, singer Brandon Boyd is not a vocal genius, but lyrically and in performance, he's sensitive, charismatic, and unique. Ditto for the 13 cuts that make up Make Yourself. --Katherine Turman No Description Available.Genre: Popular MusicMedia Format: Compact DiskRating: PARelease Date: 26-OCT-1999 |

Cars [Original Soundtrack] [Collector's Edition] List Price: $18.98 Sale Price: $10.08 |
|
Cars is a typical Disney-Pixar animated movie in that it deals with an anthropomorphic character (here, a car) and the heartwarming values of family and friendship. (Alas, we'll have to wait a little while longer for the company to take on greed and selfishness.) The accompanying soundtrack is equally typical in that it's split between catchy pop songs and a score by Randy Newman. The clear highlight of the pop tracks is Sheryl Crow's boisterous, huge-sounding "Real Gone" (her best song in ages). Rascal Flatts also cover Tom Cochrane's 1991 hit "Life Is a Highway," while John Mayer rocks out on "Route 66" (Chuck Berry's elegantly lean version is included as well). For his part, Newman continues his distinguished association with quality animation by supplying a nimble score. It's fun to hear him deploy riffs that wouldn't be out of place on a Quiet Riot album on the bombastic "Opening Race," while the bluesy "Bessie" does George Thorogood with a tuba. The CD's overall Southern flavor is emphasized by the frequent use of banjo and slide guitar, as well as by score tracks cantering about, like "McQueen and Sally." And, as usual, Newman delivers a nostalgic, misty-eyed song--in this case "Our Town," performed by that master of sensitive laid-back charm, James Taylor. --Elisabeth Vincentelli 20 tracks including Newman's score plus James Taylor, Rascal Flatts etc. Digipac. |

Tron: Legacy (Four-Disc Combo: Blu-ray 3D / Blu-ray / DVD / Digital Copy) List Price: $49.99 Sale Price: $26.95 |
|
The luminescent lines and shimmering surfaces of Tron: Legacy will tantalize anyone who's lusted after the latest smartphone. The long-ago disappearance of his computer-genius father has left Sam Flynn (Garrett Hedlund, Four Brothers) with existential ennui and a lot of money. When he discovers his father's secret workshop, he gets sucked into a computerized realm ruled by a megalomaniac computer program named Clu--who just happens to be his father's virtual doppelganger. To find his real father (Jeff Bridges, reprising his role from the original Tron, with a bit of his role from The Big Lebowski thrown in for kicks), Sam has to fight in gladiatorial games, drive in digital demolition derbies, and be stripped and dressed by slinky pneumatic babes. For all the techno-babble and quasi-philosophy the characters spout, this is a movie without an idea in its shiny head. It would be pointless to describe the many sillinesses because Tron: Legacy isn't actually trying to be smart; it's trying to look cool. It succeeds. Olivia Wilde (House) looks like the coolest action figure ever (if the entire movie could be nothing but the shot of her lounging on a futuristic sofa, it would be a masterpiece of avant-garde gizmo-fetishism). The facemasks are cool, the glowing skintight outfits are cool, the light-cycles are really, really cool--and let's be honest, it's all about the light-cycles. That's what the audience for Tron wants, and that's what Tron: Legacy delivers. --Bret Fetzer Versions of Tron: Legacy on Blu-ray and DVD Tron: Legacy DVD Tron: Legacy (Two-Disc Combo) Tron: Legacy (Four-Disc Combo) Tron: Legacy / Tron The Original Classic (Five-Disc Combo) Tron: Legacy / Tron: The Original Classic (Five-Disc Combo in Identity Disc Collectible Packaging) Release Date April 5, 2011 April 5, 2011 April 5, 2011 April 5, 2011 April 5, 2011 Format/Disc # DVD Blu-ray, DVD Blu-ray 3D, Blu-ray, DVD, Digital Copy Tron: Legacy includes: Blu-ray 3D, Blu-ray, DVD, Digital Copy Tron: The Original Classics includes: Blu-ray Tron: Legacy includes: Blu-ray 3D, Blu-ray, DVD, Digital Copy Tron: The Original Classics includes: Blu-ray Tron: Legacy Blu-ray 3D No No Yes Yes Yes Tron: The Original Classic No No No Yes Yes Digital Copy No No Yes Yes Yes Collectable Lithograph No No No No Yes Bonus Content First look at Tron: Uprising, the Disney XD animated series; Visualizing Tron: Watch how the filmmakers brought the astonishing world inside the Grid to life; Installing the cast: Stars discuss their Tron experience Same as Tron: Legacy DVD The Next Day: Flynn Lives Revealed: What happens immediately following the end of the movie?; Launching the Legacy: Beyond the amazing visuals is a rich story filled with an entire world's history and mythology; Disc Roars: Watch director Joseph Kosinski use the raucous crowd at Comic-Con to record actual ADR for the disc game stadium crowd; Music video: “Derezzed” written, produced, and performed by Daft Punk Same as Tron: Legacy DVD Same as Tron: Legacy (Two-Disc Combo) Same as Tron: Legacy DVD Same as Tron: Legacy (Two-Disc Combo) Same as Tron: Legacy DVD Same as Tron: Legacy (Two-Disc Combo) Limited edition identity disc packaging Tron: The Original Classic Bonus Content None None None Exclusive photo Tronology; The Tron phenomenon; The making of Tron; Deleted scenes: with introductions by Bruce Boxleitner; Audio commentary:Steven Lisberger, Donald Kushner, Harrison Ellenshaw and Richard Taylor; Production gallery; Storyboards: showcasing early work on Light Cycles; Storyboard-To-Film comparisons Exclusive photo Tronology; The Tron phenomenon; The making of Tron; Deleted scenes: with introductions by Bruce Boxleitner; Audio commentary:Steven Lisberger, Donald Kushner, Harrison Ellenshaw and Richard Taylor; Production gallery; Storyboards: showcasing early work on Light Cycles; Storyboard-To-Film comparisons Disney presents a high-tech motion picture unlike anything you've ever seen in an astonishing 3D Combo Pack. Firefly: The Complete Series [Blu-ray] List Price: $89.99 Sale Price: $39.95 |
|
As the 2005 theatrical release of Serenity made clear, Firefly was a science fiction concept that deserved a second chance. Devoted fans (or "Browncoats") knew it all along, and with this well-packaged DVD set, those who missed the show's original broadcasts can see what they missed. Creator Joss Whedon's ambitious science-fiction Western (Whedon's third series after Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel) was canceled after only 11 of these 14 episodes had aired on the Fox network, but history has proven that its demise was woefully premature. Whedon's generic hybrid got off to a shaky start when network executives demanded an action-packed one-hour premiere ("The Train Job"); in hindsight the intended two-hour pilot (also titled "Serenity," and oddly enough, the final episode aired) provides a better introduction to the show's concept and splendid ensemble cast. Obsessive fans can debate the quirky logic of combining spaceships with direct parallels to frontier America (it's 500 years in the future, and embattled humankind has expanded into the galaxy, where undeveloped "outer rim" planets struggle with the equivalent of Old West accommodations), but Whedon and his gifted co-writers and directors make it work, at least well enough to fashion a credible context from the incongruous culture-clashing of past, present, and future technologies, along with a polyglot language (the result of two dominant superpowers) that combines English with an abundance of Chinese slang. What makes it work is Whedon's delightfully well-chosen cast and their nine well-developed characters--a typically Whedon-esque extended family--each providing a unique perspective on their adventures aboard Serenity, the junky but beloved "Firefly-class" starship they call home. As a veteran of the disadvantaged Independent faction's war against the all-powerful planetary Alliance (think of it as Underdogs vs. Overlords), Serenity captain Malcolm Reynolds (Nathan Fillion) leads his compact crew on a quest for survival. They're renegades with an amoral agenda, taking any job that pays well, but Firefly's complex tapestry of right and wrong (and peace vs. violence) is richer and deeper than it first appears. Tantalizing clues about Blue Sun (an insidious mega-corporation with a mysteriously evil agenda), its ties to the Alliance, and the traumatizing use of Serenity's resident stowaway (Summer Glau) as a guinea pig in the development of advanced warfare were clear indications Firefly was heading for exciting revelations that were precluded by the series' cancellation. Fortunately, the big-screen Serenity (which can be enjoyed independently of the series) ensured that Whedon's wild extraterrestrial west had not seen its final sunset. Its very existence confirms that these 14 episodes (and enjoyable bonus features) will endure as irrefutable proof Fox made a glaring mistake in canceling the series. --Jeff Shannon On the Blu-ray discs Firefly has a picture that's a little softer than most Blu-ray discs (especially in the effects shots), but it is an improvement over the DVDs (even in an upconverting DVD player or Blu-ray player), and the punchy sound (DTS HD 5.1 compared to the DVDs' 2.0 surround) is a definite upgrade. In addition to the original bonus features, there are a couple new ones: a 25-minute conversation among Whedon, Nathan Fillion, Ron Glass, and Alan Tudyk in which they discuss the series and a number of specific episodes (Fillion recalls thinking he was getting fired after the first episode), and a new commentary track by the four fellows on "Our Mrs. Reynolds." And since it's easy to get sucked into watching multiple episodes, it's nice to have a Play All feature on the BDs. --David HoriuchiBeyond Firefly on Blu-ray Stargate: Continuum Blu-ray Sci-Fi Bundle Sunshine Stills from Firefly (Click for larger image) Genre: Television: SeriesRating: NRRelease Date: 11-NOV-2008Media Type: Blu-Ray |
The world of video games is one of the largest and most lucrative fields in programming. Games like "Grand Theft Auto 4" and "Need For Speed" have topped the list of the most played games on any console. Part of the appeal of these games is their realism when it comes to driving a car.
Could video game programmers use their talents to teach kids how to drive responsibly?
One argument against video games is they subconsciously teach our children the road is a place to have fun, when they should be focused on safety. The argument for video games is they give children an advantage because of the hand-eye coordination they learn at such an early age.
If programmers focus on the latter argument and the positive effects video games can have, they might be able to come up with games that promote safe driving habits while still entertaining the masses.
Focus - One of the issues young drivers face is the ability to focus on the road. With a video game that simulates different aspects of driving, a student could effectively gain confidence and learn to pay attention when they are in the driver's seat.
Seat Belts - Another aspect that could be implemented is a way of making their seat belt a fail-safe in the game. For instance, the game cannot be started until the seat-belt has been fastened.
Speeding - Young drivers often feel a sense of immortality when they first get their license. By implementing a strategy to get driving speed down, programmers could use a point system in their game. When a driver goes over the speed limit they lose a point, which affects their overall score in the game.
Skids - Knowing how to recover from a skid is an excellent thing to have when you are just starting out on the road. Using a simulation to regain control of your vehicle could be life saving to a new driver.
Impaired Driving - When you try to explain what being impaired is like, it doesn't seem to register with a lot of young drivers. With this in mind, a video game could simulate the way that driving while impaired really is. This way, young drivers can see how fast a vehicle can go out of control.
Avoidance - Most drivers will have to avoid some kind of accident, animal or inclement weather. With the advanced technology that has been developed over the last couple of years, video games have become increasingly better in the graphics arena. We now have high definition quality video games and this could be perfect for training young drivers on how to look down the road, avoid animals, and avoid serious accidents.
Weather - Teaching a student how to drive in the summer cannot teach them how to drive in a snowstorm. With a video game we can successfully imitate a blizzard or heavy rain and wind. This could completely revolutionize how new drivers are prepared for any kind of weather that could cause an accident.
Video games are getting more and more advanced as the years go on. Games that allow our children to crash cars, speed on the roads, and make a sport out of running people over could be better spent on teaching them the responsibility that comes with driving a car. With video games focusing more on driver safety, we might see less accidents and give new drivers the ability to avoid becoming a statistic.
If you've been injured in an accident as a first time driver in Las Vegas, contact a Las Vegas personal injury lawyer immediately to discuss your case.

I just bought a Genesis (Version 2 to be exact) off eBay, and I'm trying to figure out if Sega Mega Drive games work in it? Because if I'm not mistaken, the Mega Drive was the PAL version of the Genesis? Does anyone know for sure??
