ATAPI Subsystem Reports Larger Hard Disk Space
Windows 2000 Service Pack (SP2) and its earlier versions do not provide support for 48-bit LBA (Logical Block Addressing), which is a technology that extends the IDE ATA/ATAPI hard drive capacity beyond standard limit of 137.4 GB. To enable it, you should install the latest Windows 2000 Service Pack available. Further, for 48-bit LBA ATAPI support to function correctly, you need to edit HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetServicesAtapiParameters key along with considering other system requirements.
After enabling the key, if your system doesn't complete the required minimum requirements to support it, certain issues might arise that compel you to delete the existing hard disk partition. For this reason, you should maintain a valid data backup, which can be used to restore. However, in case of any backup-related concerns, a fully-competent utility will be required to Recover Windows Partition.
For instance, consider you try to install a copy of Windows 2000 SP3 integrated on an ATAPI hard disk, which is larger than 137 GB. While text-mode portion of Setup, you experience that ATAPI subsystem reports larger hard disk space than which can be addressed without enabling the 48-bit LBA support.
Cause
The ATAPI hard disk has already been formatted in system installed with 48-bit enabled operating system. While such cases, the hard disk partition table has been created but possesses incorrect disk information.
Solution
To correct incorrect disk information issues, you need to delete and recreate the existing disk partition(s) by any of the listed tools:

After deleting partition through Setup, you should quit it to try installing Windows. The data deleted while the process should be restored from backup. However if you find the backup currently absent, invalid, incompletely updated or damaged, you should use a partition recovery tool to recover partition.

how to format my harddrive?
the windows subsystem system has terminated. thats the message i get in white writing on blue screen when i try an boot my laptop. i run vista an one day it just failed i am running ubuntu 9.10 at the moment so i have access to the net an such. but i dont know how to format the harddrive i havent had any luck trawling through forums. i have a vista business install disk but it only gives me the option to intall on a different partition or repair. i have tried repairing it hasnt worked. is there a way or do i have to download another windows disc?
Boot up the vista disk and click on ''advanced drive options'' then delete all the partitions by pressing delete tab.
After pressing delete you will now see the partition is unallocated meaning its blank.
Finally select the largest unallocated partition and press continue, it will format and install vista as new
