What Is A Computer Storage Device?
Memory or computer information storage refers to different types of computer device that maintain digital information used for computing. It is one of the vital components, which makes the computer work. Commonly, a computer is equipped with two types of memory respectively called primary memory and secondary memory. Each of the memory has their own method of storing information.
In the past, the primary memory is made of small magnetic ceramic rings that are threaded with wires. This can store information through the polarity of the magnetic field. The magnetic ceramic rings were used up until silicon chips are used. These days, the main memory is made of integrated circuits, which allows it to store information. Moreover, the random access memory can access any data and return it in a constant time. Furthermore, the main memory is small and lightweight. However, this type of storage is quite expensive. In addition, most of the main memory is volatile, which means that once there is no power supplied to the memory, data will be lost.
On the other hand, the secondary memory is different from the main memory. The secondary storage is not directly accessible by the CPU. Usually, hard disk drives are used as the secondary memory for modern computers. The speed of the hard drives is much slower in contrast with the random access memory. However, the secondary memory is non-volatile, which makes it an ideal data-storing device. The information that is stored in the hard disks will not be lost even if there is no supplied power to the device. Moreover, hard disks are less expensive than the primary memory.
In addition, there is also a third memory or tertiary memory. This memory is much slower in contrast to the primary and secondary memory. Moreover, the use of the tertiary memory was mainly for archival of rarely accessed information. This memory is usually used for extremely large information stores. Furthermore, it can store information without human operators. This device typically uses robotic mechanism, which will mount and dismount data from the archive.
Furthermore, the performance of the storage device is measured through its latency. Usually, the unit of measurement for the main memory is nanosecond and millisecond for the secondary memory. The raw capacity of the primary and secondary memory also differs. The best accessibility characteristic for both primary memory and secondary memory is random access. This is due to that stored information in any location can be accessed at any instant in just about the same time.
Overall, there are different type of storage device that a computer can make use of. These memory devices are extremely important for the computer to function. The computer memory has different characteristics. There are volatile and non-volatile memory devices. Moreover, the speed and accessibility of the computer memory depends on its capacity. Usually, the main memory is much faster than other memory stores. Furthermore, these memory stores are made to be energy efficient and can be recycled, which will make it much better for the environment.
