The Moody Blues - A Night at Red Rocks with the Colorado Symphony Orchestra
List Price: $19.98
Sale Price: $11.96

A Night at Red Rocks, taped in Colorado's gorgeous natural amphitheater in 1992, is an ambitious undertaking for these still-stomping rock dinosaurs: the classic Moody Blues lineup playing with the Colorado Symphony Orchestra and no safety net. The band rises to the occasion, giving fans a solid if sentimental survey of its long and prosperous career. The performances and the material vary in quality, but the group comes through where it counts. Hits like "The Voice," "The Story in Your Eyes," and "Nights in White Satin" sound great, as does "Question," the Moodys' greatest contribution to rock music. The Symphony plays well, but the group misses some prime opportunities to use it, adhering to synth parts where an orchestra would have worked nicely (most notably in the rocking "Gemini Dream"). There's no surround mix here, but band leaders Justin Haywood and John Lodge deserve kudos for their able sound mixing. --Michael Mikesell
The superband from the Sixties and Seventies turns in an evening of inventive, artistic rock music, in which they perform such gems as "Tuesday Afternoon (Forever Afternoon)," "Lovely to See You," "Nights in White Satin," "Question," and "Ride My See-Saw." 95 min. Standard; Soundtrack: English Dolby Digital stereo.

To loosely paraphrase the traditional Passover question: What makes this Dave Matthews live album different from the last one he recorded at Denver's Red Rocks amphitheater a decade previously? There's a savory cover of The Zombies' chestnut "Time of the Season" strategically frontloaded, but this edition revolves largely around the Stand Up album he was ostensibly promoting on this '05 tour stand at his beloved Rocks, as witnessed by focused renditions of the title track, "American Baby" and "Dream Girl" here. But as the set's workout of "Louisiana Bayou" forcefully argues, their sense of energetic economy (and occasional, timely politicking) infuses much of the rest of Matthews jamfest ethos with renewed muscular wallop as well. The presence of a horn section and guest keyboardist Butch Taylor on some tracks ups the ante considerably, though even core band renditions of staples like disc one's expansive closer "Bartender" seem charged with renewed passion. The running order here occasionally betrays the collection was edited from four nights and a considerably wider range of performances, but the included bonus DVD gratifyingly expands upon the audio rather than simply replicating it with complimentary performances of "Crash Into Me," "Recently" and "Jimi Thing." --Jerry McCulley

Centennial: The Complete Series

A remarkably ambitious and engrossing project, this 1978 television miniseries ran 26-and-a-half hours, cost a then-enormous $25 million, and involved 4 directors, 5 cinematographers, and somewhere in the neighborhood of 100 speaking parts. Based on James Michener's panoramic bestseller about the settling of the American West--as reflected in the history of a fictional town called Centennial, Colorado--the story begins in the late 18th century and ends with a typical 20th century conflict over land usage. Centennial, however, largely concentrates on various memorable frontiersmen, trappers, Indians, ranchers, cowboys, and farmers from long ago. Richard Chamberlain shines as the pioneer Alexander McKeag, Robert Conrad does some of his best work as French-Canadian Pasquinel, and performances by Alex Karras, Chad Everett, Sally Kellerman, Raymond Burr, Richard Crenna, David Janssen, and Dennis Weaver effectively add to a tapestry of adventure, tragedy, violence, and dubious Western progress. Produced at a time when TV networks were in the throes of acknowledging America's history of racial injustice, the program paints a starkly villainous portrait of opportunists exploiting and destroying Indians in the name of manifest destiny. While the project's great length might make one wary of diving in, Centennial is the sort of carefully paced drama that makes one care about the intertwined destinies of unique characters and how they illuminate America's past. --Tom Keogh

Ground Breaking Outdoor Activity in Steamboat Springs, Colorado
On your vacation to the mountains this year, you'll probably go skiing. If Colorado is your destination, you may take a snowmobile tour, a horseback ride, or hit the tubing hills. But only if you come to Steamboat Springs can you spend your day operating massive construction machinery in the country's only heavy equipment play area.
Dig a pond with a 10-ton Catepillar Hydraulic Excavator! Push boulders the size of an ATV around an obstacle course with a Bulldozer! This is not your everyday experince. This is a whole new breed of adventure, one that is sure to leave you smiling for days.
When you arrive at the cabin, instructors begin with a safety briefing, dedicated to fully preparing each patron. Next they will go over the various controls that you're about to wrap your fist- and your brain around. You are given a bright orange construction site vest to wear, a head-set radio and water to keep you hydrated. You'll have plenty of time to get aquainted with the cab of the giant machine, which you will find to be spacious, climate controlled, and comfortable. Then you head out into a jumbo sandbox that spans 10 acres!
Initially, it seems overwhelming; so much to remember, so much going on! Then, as you play this real-life video game, against a backdrop of white mountains, practicing and discovering, suddenly everything clicks. Most guests get their bearings within about 20 minutes. By the end, you'll feel as though you'd be an asset to any construction crew!
The owner of this innovative adventure has created various exercises involving three different machines; excavators, bulldozers and skid loaders. Each participant gets his or her own work area. One drill has you carefully picking up and strategically stacking small boulders with the enormous arm of the excavator, known as the "boom". Another challenge involves building an 8-foot ramp with a Bulldozer, driving up it and teetering on the edge, absorbed in the anticipation of crashing (safely) down the other side.
If you'e the ambitious type, timed challenges and team competitions have been designed to intensify this already exciting undertaking. Also, this adventure is suited perfectly for corporate team-building excursions. You'll leave with an undeniable sense of accomplishment, and smile they will not readily fade.
This activity is fun, empowering, and ground-breaking...literally.
