What's a classic book of Native American spiritual ideas?
I'm trying to find a classic book of Native American spiritual beliefs.
By "classic" I mean foundational in the study of these areas, not a book written by some new-age guru. I mean a book classic enough that you'd get it as a reading assignment in a university class on anthropology, philosophy or spiritual studies.
So far the only thing I've identified that's close to this is Black Elk Speaks. Any other suggestions? Thanks in advance!
there are no accurate studies done on our spirituality and that is intentional. we don't share the real things, but we will give a persistent (read pain in the a@@) anthropologist what they are looking for...a good story filled with stereotypical things they are expecting anyway.
even black elk speaks isn't real. while some of his words are, everything was twisted to fit someone else's ideas of what we believe. i've yet to find a single non native person who is even close to the truth when it comes to our spirituality.
ETA: the longhouse tradition is not the same as handsome lake. the code of handsome lake is not traditional. and no..in our culture traditional is not "fluid". not using the arabic alphabet does not mean thnigs were not written down. would you call egyptians illiterate too?
now you see why we don't share important things with non natives.
actually after further thought, if you want to get a glimpse into the native mind, try reading Neither Wolf Nor Dog. its as close as you will get to hanging out with an elder.
