South Pacific (Original 1949 Broadway Cast) South Pacific (Original 1949 Broadway Cast)
List Price: $11.98
Sale Price: $9.85

Based on James Michener's Tales of the South Pacific, Rodgers and Hammerstein's Pulitzer prize-winning South Pacific is one of the most beloved musicals ever to hit the stage. The appeal is simple: a collection of stunning compositions--immense symphonic sound orchestrated by Rodgers collaborator Robert Russell Bennett--and characters with a simple though cohesive through-line. On this original Broadway cast recording, the lovely, girlish Mary Martin (Peter Pan, Annie Get Your Gun) is the heartily feminine American nurse Nellie Bly to the dashing former Metropolitan Opera bass Ezio Pinza as French plantation owner Emile de Becque. This release takes from the original high-quality tapes cut in 1949 (rather than the acetates, which were recorded simultaneously for the vinyl release of the day). There are alternate takes of a few songs and the restored original version of the hard-hitting racial commentary number "Carefully Taught." Pinza's "Some Enchanted Evening" is tender and lovely without being cloying. Martin's confidence and warm vocal expressiveness on numbers such as "Twin Soliloquies" and the bonus track, "Loneliness of the Evening," are stellar, and the choral numbers are both solid and spunky. --Paige La Grone

Thus began what would become the international brand name Victorinox, a combination of Victoria, for Elsener's mother, and "inox," or stainless steel. Today, Victorinox produces watches, luggage, clothing, and, famously, Swiss Army Knives. The original product dates to 1897, when Elsener patented the Swiss Officer's and Sports Knife he supplied to the Swiss Army. Following World War II, American servicemen and women shopping in PX stores shortened the name to Swiss Army Knife, which lives on in English-speaking countries around the world and has become a metaphor for versatility.

Laurel & Hardy: The Essential Collection Laurel & Hardy: The Essential Collection
List Price: $99.98
Sale Price: $50.48

Pardon Us (1931), Laurel and Hardy's first feature-length film, finds the duo causing chaos behind bars after selling bootleg beer to a cop. Ex-soldiers Stan and Ollie try to reunite a war buddy's orphaned daughter with her grandfather in "Pack Up Your Troubles" (1932). The boys are lodge members who sneak off to a convention--minus their wives--in "Sons of the Desert" (1933). Based on an opera, "The Bohemian Girl" (1936) has Gypsies Stan and Ollie caring for a kidnapped princess. The pair play dual roles as long-lost twin brothers in "Our Relations" (1936) and help a young woman save her frontier inheritance from land grabbers "Way Out West" (1937). An Alpine lodge is the setting for music and laughs in "Swiss Miss" (1938), while Ollie brings old army pal Stan home to care for him in "Block-Heads" (1938). The boys are off to college in "A Chump at Oxford" (1940), and they take a "relaxing" ocean voyage as "Saps at Sea" (1940). This 10-disc set also features all 40 L&H sound shorts made for Hal Roach from 1929-1935--including "Berth Marks," "Brats," "Below Zero," "Our Wife" "The Music Box," and others--plus Spanish-language versions, guest cameos, and more. 32 1/3 hrs. total. Standard; Soundtrack: English.

"Eternal pals and eternal antagonists, Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy are the great partnership of movie slapstick. They finally get their DVD due with Laurel & Hardy: The Essential Collection, a 10-disc orgy of pratfalls, slow burns, and slap fights--in short, a collection that truly qualifies as a must-have for connoisseurs of comedy. The collection contains the sound films that Laurel and Hardy made for producer Hal Roach, the man who teamed the simpering English vaudeville player and the rotund American actor in the first place (although their laughs are evenly divided, Laurel was the creative force and chief gag-inventor of the duo). Their track record is proof that it isn't merely the jokes that make for comic success; it's the personalities of the comedians. Thus, Stan's dimwitted innocence and Ollie's perpetually exasperated reactions (raised to an exquisite art by Hardy's comprehensive glances at the camera, assuring the audience's complicity in his misery) are the essence of their success. Some films are great, some merely passable, but all stick blissfully to character. This is on glorious display through these Roach pictures, whether it's the boys sharing one small train berth in Berth Marks, executing their famous synchronized dance in Way Out West, or laboring to get that piano up a very steep flight of stairs in the Oscar-winning The Music Box. The films look as good as movies from 1929 to 1940 can reasonably be expected to look. Included in the boxed set are seven foreign-language films (six in Spanish, one in French), shot in order to keep the duo popular in overseas markets, before dubbing made that goal easier. Fascinatingly, these films often extend the English-language films they are ostensibly adapted from, with different gags and plot turns--and it's fun to hear Stan and Ollie speaking in another language. Special features include a ho-hum 40-minute tribute with testimonials from fellow comedians (especially talkative are Dick Van Dyke and Jerry Lewis); an ""Interactive Map"" with Los Angeles location sites from their movies; three Roach shorts in which L&H pop up in cameos; and a 1942 short produced for the Department of Agriculture (another L&H cameo). A few (not many) films have commentaries that include the informed Laurel and Hardy buff Richard W. Bann; Sons of the Desert has a track with Tim Conway and Chuck McCann, who don't seem to know how a commentary track works but have a nice time watching the movie. --Robert Horton"

The Pink Panther Classic Cartoon Collection The Pink Panther Classic Cartoon Collection
List Price: $69.98
Sale Price: $23.99

One of the unforeseen (and hugely profitable) benefits of the first Pink Panther movie was the popularity of the cartoon cat from that film's classic credits sequence. Added on a hunch by director Blake Edwards and concocted by the DePatie-Freleng animation team, the slinky pink feline immediately spawned his own series of cartoons, first for theatrical release and later for television. The saga is gathered in The Pink Panther Classic Cartoon Collection, five discs of 124 cartoons, plus extras. This would have to be considered the ultimate such collection, and more than the average fan could handle in a few sittings (or a few dozen). But they're all here. When United Artists commissioned David DePatie and Friz Freleng (whose new company was born from the eclipse of the old Warner Bros. cartoon unit) to make freestanding Pink Panther cartoons, their first effort struck gold. Literally: The Pink Phink won the Oscar for best animated short subject, and is still a prime example of circa-1964 line drawing and visual humor. Most of the early shorts display a sure sense of timing and a cheeky feel for the era; they were directed by Freleng and Hawley Pratt (Pratt's design for the Pink Panther had been selected by Blake Edwards from dozens of offerings at the time of the first feature). In two of the first handful, Sink Pink and Pink Ice, the Pink Panther himself speaks stray lines of dialogue, a mistake that would not be repeated later. One unwelcome aural intrusion: some of the cartoons here have a laugh track from the TV series, even on the Oscar-nominated Pink Blueprint. Animation voiceover veterans of the era chimed in with narration or voices for other characters; for instance, the indefatigable Paul Frees does the narration on Phinkfinger, a funny spoof of 007-style spy movies. But most of the cartoons are wordless, which is one reason they remained popular internationally for so many years. The main reason is the slinky character of the Panther, a mischievous hipster who could be either the instrument of chaos or the victim, depending on the cartoon. The plots tend toward the cartoon verities: the necessity of catching a mouse or silencing an alarm clock, for instance. A documentary, Behind the Feline, gives a fine account of the history of the character; it is also bundled on a previous boxed set, The Pink Panther Film Collection. Useful new extras include a portrait of Friz Freleng by his daughters, an illuminating interview with animator-director Art Leonardi, and a delightful vignette with Leonardi instructing us on how to quickly draw the Pink Panther. The opening-title sequences from five Pink Panther movies are included. Throughout the cartoons and the extras, you will be reminded of one incalculable boost to the series: Henry Mancini's lithe, foxy theme music, which surely had much to do with the character's enduring fame. Mancini gets an onscreen shout-out in Pink, Plunk, Plink, in which the Panther tries to inject his theme into an orchestral performance of Beethoven's Fifth. --Robert Horton

A race to be crowned the telephone inventor

Although, whenever anyone thinks about the telephone and who invented it, the name Alexander Graham Bell automatically springs to mind, but it very nearly was not he, as the patenting of the design ended up as a race between Bell and one Elisha Gray. Bell managed to register his design first, which resulted in a major legal battle between the two parties for right to claim to be the inventor of the telephone, which Bell subsequently won, and now history books record the inventor of the telephone to be Alexander Graham Bell.

The telephone was the next evolutionary step from the renowned telegraph system in the area of telecommunications. Like the telegraph the telephone is a wire based electrical system, unlike the telegraph, the telephone system is able to transmit multiple messages along the wire at the same time.

Telegraph System

The telegraph system used Morse Code to transmit messages across the telegraph wire, and only one message can use the telegraph wire at any given time.

Telegraph Becomes The Telephone

Some intrepid inventor types realised that the telegraph wire should be able to transmit multiple signals simultaneously and thus allow the transmission of many messages at the same time.

It was whilst working on finding a solution to the conversion from being able to only transfer one message at a time to the transmission of multiple messages simultaneously, that Alexander Graham Bell and others realised that besides being able to send multiple messages in Morse Code, it was also possible to send different types of signals which resulted in different types of sound.

Harmonic Telegraph

The first ever sound made was of a twanging clock spring. This happened on the 2nd of June, 1875, whilst Bell was running some experiments.

The Telephone is Invented

On March the 10th 1876, Alexander graham Bell made the first ever voice transmission. He sent a message to his assistant, saying "Mr Watson come here I need you". The day of the first ever voice communication over the telephone also marked the birth of this communication device.

Retro Telephones

It Is possible to obtain the types of telephones used since the telephone first came into existence. They are usually either known as vintage telephones or retro telephones. Generally there is a difference between a vintage telephone and a retro telephone in that a retro telephone looks and feels like the phone it depicts but its inner workings are modern (not always the case), whereas a vintage telephone is an original, it would have been made at the time that its appearance depicts, e.g. vintage trim phone would have been made in the 1970s, vintage rotary dial telephone would have been made between the 1950s to 1970s.

Vintage Clothing: 5 Ways to Make the Most of Your Vintage Clothing Dollar

Some people think of thrift shops as carrying grungy old clothes that no one wants because they’re no longer wearable. Although that can be the case with certain thrift shops – I’ve been in some that pile everything into bins you don’t even want to look through because you know the chances of finding anything you’d even consider wearing are next to none - there are millions of beautifully-dressed women all over America that are wearing vintage clothing.

How do you become one of the latter? Here are five tips for vintage clothing success.

1. If you’re one of those women who think wearing something that belonged to someone else is unthinkable - get over it. Really. I’ve met many women who dress like a million bucks; so stylish and unique I can’t resist commenting. They then tell me they shop in thrift stores, and share their favorites. I make a bee-line in that direction at my first opportunity.

2. Go to shops in the best areas of town. When people donate their unwanted clothing, or put it up for consignment, they generally do so in a nearby shop. People in the more affluent areas usually have better quality clothes in the first place and if something doesn’t look good on them or doesn’t fit properly, they tend to get rid of it immediately rather than keeping it around ‘just in case.’ They also tend to take good care of their clothing, so the articles have less wear, no stains, and so on. In those shops, it’s not unusual to find vintage clothing and shoes that have obviously never been worn.

3. Unless you’re ready to have something altered, or are handy that way yourself, don’t get something that isn’t quite right. You’ll end up with a closet full of great clothes that you can’t wear - while you still wander around in jeans and t-shirts.

4. Unless you find something you really want at least half the time you shop at particular vintage clothing store, don’t bother going there anymore. Your time is better spent finding another shop that inevitably has something you like.

5. Don’t forget to shop online. There are vintage clothing dealers on the Internet that have great products. If you find one that offers specific measurements, lots of good photos and so on, you can get something that’s just right for you without ever having to leave home.

With the economy being in bad shape and money a little tight, clothing is likely to be one of the first things cut from your budget. But that doesn’t mean you can’t look great. With vintage fashion, you can find great outfits at a fraction of the price.
