Guide to Intermodal Transport in the US List Price: $9.95 |
|
Transporting freight, whether goods or people by two or more different types of carrier (modes) from one origin to one destination is intermodal transport. Today, world wide, the term intermodal is used to describe freight movements using surface carriers, steamship lines or railroads, to move the greater intermediate distance at their naturally lower costs. At both ends of the transport move more flexible modes, as trucking, are used to pickup and deliver. The term (intermodal transport) is further refined for the great majority of movements to mean freight loaded into truck trailers (semi-trailers) and trailer like vehicles (containers). That focus is what A Guide to Intermodal Transport in the United States is all about. Containers and trailers moving freight that has had a prior or subsequent move via railroad or steamship line. The author had over 50 years experience in freight transport prior to selling his trucking company. This background was totally transport in trucking, railroads, industry and government. While the final 30 years was totally involved intermodally, the prior years had active participation and contribution in the growth of that transport methodology. All of this is reflected in the Guide to Intermodal Transport. There are many aspects of the intermodal business. The book categorizes them âallâ and provides their background and operational usage:Trucking and Intermodal: This Category takes in Markets, Safety, Pricing, Associations, Insurance, Drivers, Computers and Automation as well as providing Reference Tools. The 2004 Hours of Service re-regulation is an âEnd Pieceâ to the book.Railroads and Intermodal: Here Concepts and Background, Interchange Agreements, Terminal (Ramp) Operations, Equipment in use and Computer Support is discussed.Steamship Lines: Agreements to Interchange equipment with others, Collection points both at Ports and Inland (Pools), Equipment in use, and Automation are subjects.Equipment: This category provides oversight where all the foregoing modal connections are concerned. Positioning containers and trailers, How Positioning is accomplished, and the Equipment used, are all reviewed.Governmental Involvement: From Certification, Safety and Weight Constraints to a brief on State and Federal concerns. Brokers are a Significant Part of the business: Shipper Agents, Load Finders, Foreign Freight Forwarders, Railroads, Steamship Lines, Motor Carriers, Board Keepers, Logistics Companies as well as the Equipment they may use or control. An Appendix contains a âpaperâ on Seal Protection, and a thorough Glossary. If you have read this far you have an interest in the business. It comes with a limited lifetime warranty against defects. About Thule To say that Thule's beginnings in the U.S. were humble would be an understatement. Founding member Ake Skeppner sold products at windsurf competitions on the New England shoreline, exhibited the product line at a number of different trade shows, and even canvassed local retailers in the greater New York area, all from his "office"--a now-famous station wagon. Initial success was found in the small but growing sport of windsurfing where a strong, reliable roof rack was an indispensable piece of equipment. This was quickly followed by success in the ski business where Thule's Swedish heritage certainly helped the product gain rapid acceptance. By the mid-1980s, the company sold products directly to ski and windsurfing shops but sold through distributors to address the large and growing bike business. A risky decision was made to terminate these distributor relationships and sell direct to retailers through a network of independent sales representatives. Much of the company's market success today can be traced to that decision. Shortly after, Ake hired an engineer and set up a small assembly plant in Elmsford, New York in order to design and manufacture bike carriers that would offer the features demanded by the U.S. consumer and compete effectively with other racks on the market. The company has since grown rapidly through product innovation, a commitment to quality, and the continuance of a strong entrepreneurial spirit as well as continuing to evolve their products to meet the needs of users. |
Your totaled car is sitting in the backyard when you get a
telephone call from your insurance adjuster. They will fix your car! In many
occasions this is good news, but when your car is nearly destroyed, and the
insurance company wants to patch it together and give it back to you, then
you've got a problem.
Think about it. The car will never be the same. If you want
to trade it in or sell it, you will probably have to take a substantial
reduction in price to be able to get rid of it. You also need to consider the
safety aspect of the car. Will your car ever be as safe as it was before the
impact?
In most accidents, cars can be fixed with no major
problems, but when you have a totaled car (or you are almost there) and the
insurance company will repair it and return it to you, you can be faced with an
uphill battle.
Insurance adjusters decide if you have a totaled car or a
fixable car. They need to first determine the value of the car and then
determine if the repair estimate is less than 70, 80, or even 90% of the car's
value. So how do you protect yourself? Here are five simple tips.
Tip # 1: Ask for the repair estimate. Getting the
repair estimate will show you what the insurance company thinks is wrong with
your car. Review the estimate. Make sure the car will be painted and that all
the necessary parts to fix it are accounted for. If you do not know mechanics
that well, take that estimate to another shop and ask them to review it. You
will be surprised when other shops will tell you that your car should not be
repaired.
Tip # 2: Make sure you have the insurance company
account for all the cost associated with fixing the car before they start
working in your car. Have them account for all the parts and the shipping cost.
Make sure that the parts they are buying are actually in inventory. In many
cases, insurance adjusters price a part, but cannot find it. This will make you
wait longer and they would have to pay for more rental.
Tip # 3: Ask for a "tear down" so you know that
there is not a totaled car but a car that can be properly fixed. When insurance
adjusters and body shops write estimates, the do not get under the damaged
parts. They only look and estimate the damage that is visible. A tear down is
the process of taking off all the damage parts and looking to see if the parts
below are also damaged. More often than not, hidden damage will appear, and this
will make the estimate of damages higher and taking you closer to a totaled car.
Insurance companies do not want to pay for this tear down.
But if you insist, they will pay for it. This is a good idea anyway for two
reasons. The tear down will most likely than not increase the repair estimate.
You will also know if the integrity of the frame and chassis were compromised in
the impact.
There is no question that the body shop can put the car
back together. The question is if a fixed totaled car will be safe to be on the
road. Make sure some one looks at the mechanical and structural integrity of the
car.
Tip # 4: Use the rental expense to your advantage.
If your totaled car is going to get repaired, then it is likely that it will
take 20 to 30 days before your vehicle again. That is only counting body work
and paint and that all parts are on hand at the time the mechanics start
working. It will take longer if you have mechanical problems.
The insurance company will be looking at a rental bill that
could be over $1,000, depending on the limits of your policy. We have seen
rental bills of $2,000. If you have a totaled car, then the insurance company
will only have to pay up to three days of rental (sometime less, depending on
your state). They will be saving significantly if they do declare a total loss.
Tip # 5: Research your state law for
diminished or diminution of value claims. If you are making a claim against
your own insurance company, some states will allow you to ask for the difference
between what the car was worth before the accident, and what it worth after it
is repaired. Many states do not allow for first party claims like this one.
However, the restrictions only apply to first party claims. If you are making
this claim against the insurance company of the person that hit you, then the
claim will be allowed. Also, if you are making a uninsured property damage claim
against your own carrier. The claim will be allowed.

New Report "Indian Commercial Vehicle Industry" available through Aarkstore Enterprise
After recording a strong performance in FY07, the Indian Commercial Vehicle (CV) industry fell into hard times in FY08. The domestic sales of the industry grew by 4.07% in FY08 as compared to a growth of 33.26% in FY07. The Medium & Heavy Commercial Vehicles Goods Carrier (M&HCV GC) segment particularly bore the brunt of the situation, with the domestic sales in this segment declining by 5.88% in FY08. The Light Commercial Vehicles Goods Carrier (LCV GC) segment, due to diversity of its usage, managed to clock a decent growth of 11.65%. The Passenger Carriers (PC) segment registered a strong growth of 26.51% on the back of ordering by both, private players and State Transport Undertakings (STUs).
The first half of FY09 brought more bad news for the industry as, in addition to M&HCV GC segment, the PC segment and the Export sales too remained subdued. Even the torch-bearing LCV GC sub-segment of Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) <=3.5 tonnes witnessed a slowing growth rate in H1 FY09 and started H2 FY09 with a y-o-y decline of 19.63% in the month of October. The rising interest rates, stringent lending norms, falling industrial growth rates and resumption of overloading are the main reasons for the current mayhem in the CV market.
The bottom line of the manufacturers too came under pressure especially in Q4 FY08 and Q1 FY09 due to the increase in input cost. The average steel prices remained high in FY08 and in Q1 FY09 and the rubber prices too started creeping up in Q1 FY09. To recover costs, the manufacturers resorted to a series of vehicle price hikes from beginning of FY09 onwards. This led to a tricky situation where manufacturers increased vehicle prices when demand was actually falling.
The situation at the freight operator end too has been grim for some time now. After seeing a healthy freight rate growth in FY07, the rates came under pressure in FY08. However, as average diesel prices declined in FY08, the operators managed to sail through. In H1 FY09, diesel prices increased but the freight rate hike has not been commensurate with the diesel price hike. As a result, the operator profitability has come under pressure. Also, with rising vehicle cost, rising tyre cost and increased financing cost; the fleet operators are resorting to postponement of new vehicle purchases.
Despite such overcast situation, manufacturers have been trying to boost sales through introduction of new models. A slew of launches were made in FY08, both in the GC and PC segments. For e.g. Force Motors (FM) launched its GC models ‘M4’ (GVW <=3.5 tonnes) and ‘Traveller Strong’ (GVW >3.5 to Indian Commercial Vehicle Industry 2
<=5 tonnes). Tata Motors (TM) launched its tippers ‘1618’ and ‘2518’. It also launched multi-axle trucks ‘2516 Super Turbo’ and ‘3118’ and Tractor Trailer (TT) ‘Novus – LPS 4923 TC’. Ashok Leyland Limited (ALL) launched its multi-axle vehicle ‘3121 H’ and TT ‘4921’. Eicher Motors (EM) launched a multi-axle vehicle ‘HERCULES 35.31’. In the PC segment, TM launched its PC model ‘Super Milo Bus Chassis’, ALL launched its luxury bus model ‘Luxura’ in addition to two bus models, targeting the Bus Rapid Transport System (BRTS) and an inter-intra city bus model ‘12m BS II’ and Isuzu-Swaraj Mazda (SM) launched a 40-seater luxury bus. A number of launches are lined up for FY09 too.
Recently, the industry also saw a few collaborations between the domestic and the international manufacturers. ALL and Nissan Motor entered into a Joint Venture (JV) for manufacturing LCV, Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) entered into a JV with Warrenville, a wholly-owned affiliate of Navistar International Corporation for manufacturing diesel engines for M&HCVs, EM and AB Volvo (Volvo) entered into a JV for manufacturing CVs.
Growth Estimates
In the short term, the industry growth is expected to be weighed down by the adverse macro-economic environment. Though the interest rates are not likely to climb up any more in this fiscal, it will take some time for the availability of credit to improve. In FY09, CARE Research expects the GC unit sales to grow between 4-5% while in tonnage terms, the segment is likely to see de-growth of 2-3%. CARE Research estimates the GC segment to register a 5-year Compounded Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 6-7.5% in tonnage sales. The PC segment is expected to grow between 6-8%.

I am thinking of purchasing a Chariot Carriers Cougar 2 Stroller / Trailer Chassis with the wheel.?
Is the Chariot worth the money? With the wheel attachment to convert into a stroller, is it easy to use? Has anyone NOT gotten their money's worth on this purchase? Also, can you use it as a jogging stroller (not an avid runner but for ossasional runs).
We bought one for the ability to convert between bike trailer and jogging stroller.
We looked into purchasing the wheels to turn it into a stroller, but the wheels we saw were not very free turning.
Having own the Cougar, I must admit that I just don't see using it as a stroller. It's just so huge when used in that capacity. Now for places where something the size of a jogging stroller is appropriate, it's great. But the purpose for the stroller wheels are so you can turn sharp corners in tight places.
Now I have to admit, a down side as a jogging stroller is the front wheel is fixed, so if you do have to go around a corner, you have to lift the front tire off the ground to make the turn.
So the only place I could see bothering with the Cougar and the stroller wheels is if you plan to do a bunch of out door walking where the bigger tires are nice (compared to tiny stroller wheels) and you have to turn lots of corner (like following a winding path). But otherwise, I think you need sperate strollers.
