The Star Wars trilogy had the rare distinction of becoming more than just a series of movies, but a cultural phenomenon, a life-defining event for its generation. On its surface, George Lucas's original 1977 film is a rollicking and humorous space fantasy that owes debts to more influences than one can count on two hands, but filmgoers became entranced by its basic struggle of good vs. evil "a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away," its dazzling special effects, and a mythology of Jedi Knights, the Force, and droids.
In the first film, Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) gets to live out every boy's dream: ditch the farm and rescue a princess (Carrie Fisher). Accompanied by the roguish Han Solo (Harrison Ford, the only principal who was able to cross over into stardom) and trained by Jedi master Obi-Wan Kenobi (Alec Guinness), Luke finds himself involved in a galactic war against the Empire and the menacing Darth Vader (David Prowse, voiced by James Earl Jones). The following film, The Empire Strikes Back (1980), takes a darker turn as the tiny rebellion faces an overwhelming onslaught. Directed by Irvin Kershner instead of Lucas, Empire is on the short list of Best Sequels Ever, marked by fantastic settings (the ice planet, the cloud city), the teachings of Yoda, a dash of grown-up romance, and a now-classic "revelation" ending. The final film of the trilogy, Return of the Jedi (1983, directed by Richard Marquand), is the most uneven. While the visual effects had taken quantum leaps over the years, resulting in thrilling speeder chases and space dogfights, the story is an uneasy mix of serious themes (Luke's maturation as a Jedi, the end of the Empire-rebellion showdown) and the cuddly teddy bears known as the Ewoks. Years later, George Lucas transformed his films into "special editions" by adding new scenes and special effects, which were greeted mostly by shrugs from fans. They were perfectly happy with the films they had grown up with (who cares if Greedo shot first?), and thus disappointed by Lucas's decision to make the special editions the only versions available. --David Horiuchi

Amazon.com Review
Wolverine, fan favorite of the X-Men universe in both comic books and film, gets his own movie vehicle with X-Men Origins: Wolverine, a tale that reaches way, way back into the hairy mutant's story. Somewhere in the wilds of northwest Canada in the early 1800s, two boys grow up amid violence: half-brothers with very special powers. Eventually they will become the near-indestructible warriors (and victims of a super-secret government program) known as Wolverine and Sabretooth, played respectively by Hugh Jackman (returning to his role) and Liev Schreiber (new to the scene). It helps enormously to have Schreiber, an actor of brawny skills, as the showiest villain; the guy can put genuine menace into a vocal inflection or a shift of the eyes. Danny Huston is the sinister government operative whose experiments keep pullin' Wolverine back in, Lynn Collins is the woman who shares a peaceful Canadian co-existence with our hero when he tries to drop out of the program, and Ryan Reynolds adds needed humor, at least for a while. The fast-paced early reels give an entertaining kick-off to the Wolverine saga, only to slow down when a proper plot must be put together--but isn't that perpetually the problem with origin stories? And despite a cool setting, the grand finale is a little hemmed in by certain plot essentials that must be in place for the sequels, which may be why characters do nonsensical things. So, this one is fun while it lasts, if you're not looking for a masterpiece, or an explanation for Wolverine's facial grooming. --Robert Horton

Expecting to inherit a share of his late grandfather's massive estate, trust fund brat Jason (Drew Fuller) is first tested with character-building tasks meant to diminish his sense of entitlement and provide him a firm spiritual anchor from which he can chart his life's future course. When he meets a gravely ill girl (Abigail Breslin), Jason learns critical lessons about redemption. Faith-friendly drama co-stars James Garner, Ali Hillis. 117 min. Widescreen; Soundtracks: English Dolby Digital 5.1, DVS; Subtitles: English, Spanish; featurettes; more.
The Ultimate Gift is a tale of one man's tumultuous journey toward personal growth and fulfillment. Surrounded in life, and death, by avaricious family members fueled by a sense of entitlement, billionaire Red Stevens (James Garner) wants to bequeath at least one member of his extended family "the ultimate gift": something he perceives as immensely more valuable than material wealth. Red's arrogant grandson Jason (Drew Fuller) holds a deep-seated hatred for his newly-deceased grandfather, so he's surprised to learn from his grandfather's friend and lawyer Mr. Hamilton (Bill Cobbs) and assistant Miss Hastings (Lee Meriwether) that he's been mentioned in his late grandfather's will. Far from a straightforward gift of cash, land, or stock, Red's bequest comes in the form of a series of mysterious recorded instructions, the first of which requires Jason to hop on a plane for Texas the very next morning without a hint of the trip's purpose or the nature of the gift that awaits him. Dropped into a life of hard physical labor on a ranch in the middle of nowhere, Jason's bad-tempered fury eventually turns to resignation and he finds himself engaged in, and even taking pride in, the first real manual labor he's ever done in his life. Unbeknownst to him, his journey toward claiming the ultimate gift has only just begun. When he returns from Texas, Jason finds his home cleared out, his car confiscated, and instructions to produce one true friend. While Jason is reduced to sleeping in the park, a young child name Emily (Abigail Breslin) and her mother Alexia (Ali Hillis) make his acquaintance and lead him to re-examine his personal prejudices and perceptions of what's truly important in life. Jason's journey of self-discovery continues throughout a series of other trying experiences and, in the end, Grandpa Red's "ultimate gift" of life lessons profoundly and permanently improves the quality of Jason's life. What's more, Jason's new perspective of his place in society has a very positive affect on the larger community. This very powerful film is funny, heartbreaking, and intensely thought-provoking. --Tami Horiuchi Stills from The Ultimate Gift (click for larger image)

Dragon Ball Z: Season Eight (Babidi & Majin Buu Sagas)

Studio: Funimation Prod Inc Release Date: 02/10/2009
The eighth and penultimate season of Dragon Ball Z pits the Z Fighters, the Supreme Kai, and his attendant Kibito against the evil wizard Babidi, who hopes to release the monster Buu, which his father Bibidi created. (The names are apparently a back-handed salute to Walt Disney's Cinderella.) Goku, who's technically dead but still visting from the Other World, joins Vegeta and Gohan in the initial fights against Babidi's minions. As the battles escalate, Babidi use Vegeta's overweening pride to entrap the Saiyan Prince and turn him against his allies. It's all Goku can do to win Vegeta back, and the energy loosed in their stand-off enables Babidi to free Buu. Instead of one of the over-muscled behemoths the Z Fighters usually tackle, Buu is an obnoxious, infantile creature who looks like a sumo wrestler molded out of pink marshmallows. But he's incredibly powerful and resilient: even the Saiyans can't defeat him. Goku realizes only one warrior can destroy Buu: Goten and Trunks in their Super-Saiyan forms must fuse to form an über-hero. The boys initially balk, as the Dance of Fusion looks and feels silly. But Gohan and Picollo whip them into shape and the formidable Gotenks appears. Season 8 offers much more action and excitement than the World Tournament story that takes up most of Season 7. But unlike the earlier DBZ adventures, the Babidi & Majin Buu Sagas end on a cliffhanger, with the fate of the Earth and its inhabitants hanging in the balance. (Rated TV PG. suitable for ages 8 and older: violence, violence against women, tobacco and alcohol use, ethnic stereotypes) --Charles Solomon (220. The Wizard's Curse, 221. King of the Demons, 222. Eddie Murphy stars and stars in this very broad and raucous comedy that finds the Oscar-nominated Dreamgirls actor revisiting the multiple-character shtick that worked so well for him in Coming to America and The Nutty Professor. The latter's makeup-effects artist, Rick Baker, once again transforms Murphy into a variety of grotesques and caricatures, including the hugely fat, monstrous Rasputia, the Asian Mr. Wong, and the timorous Norbit, a nervous orphan raised by Wong and married to Rasputia. The latter, a member of a construction family with a plan to turn Wong's orphanage into a strip club, is a relentlessly narcissistic shrew who puts the screws on Norbit at every turn, especially when he rediscovers his love for an old friend, Kate (Thandie Newton). Kate's wish to buy and maintain the orphanage herself is secretly compromised by her fiancé (Cuba Gooding, Jr.), who is in cahoots with Rasputia's family and using Norbit to further their agenda. Extraordinarily silly, frequently crude and mean-spirited to an extreme, Norbit is far more sour than The Nutty Professor. But there are moments of inspiration, especially a wedding interrupted by wannabe pimps who launch a profane gospel groove, and a dog that talks to Norbit while he is semi-conscious. For the most part, though, Norbit impresses as a technical marvel utilizing careful shot design and skillful editing. Murphy participates in several remarkable, three-character scenes in which he happens to be all three characters, and those moments move so briskly it's easy to forget one is looking at a comic stunt. --Tom Keogh Stills from Norbit (click for larger image)
Norbit (Eddie Murphy) is a shy, skinny nerd who gets an unexpected chance to reconnect with beautiful childhood friend Kate (Thandie Newton). There's just one really, really big problem: Norbit's overweight, overbearing wife Rasputia (a fat-suited Murphy) is literally standing in their way. Can Norbit get out from under Rasputia's shadow and help Kate save Mr. Wong's (also Murphy) orphanage? Cuba Gooding, Jr., Eddie Griffin, Katt Williams, and Marlon Wayans also star. 102 min. Widescreen (Enhanced); Soundtracks: English Dolby Digital 5.1, Dolby Digital stereo Surround, French Dolby Digital 5.1; Subtitles: English, Spanish; featurettes; deleted scenes; photo gallery.

Balance Transfer Credit Card - The Easy Way To Avoid High APRs
Nowadays, credit cards offer many features designed to appeal to everyone -- from cash back and rebate offers to point systems and frequent flyer miles. Many of these offers work to your advantage only if you make large and frequent purchase. On the same hand, you get more in return if you can pay off the balance each month. Otherwise, the annual fees and high interest rates typically found on these types of cards will make the rewards seem worthless. But what about the credit card holders who always carry a balance or can't seem to get out from under the tight grip of debt? Balance transfer credit cards might be a temporary solution to your problem.
Are You Drowning In Debt?
Many Americans have several credit cards and are in debt up to their eyeballs. It is easy to fall prey to the trap set by creditors. Credit card companies and banks make it tempting to spend beyond your means, overextending yourself to the point of no return. Gaining control of your debt can be difficult. And, if you can only afford minimum payments on your accounts that barely puts a dent in the total amount you owe. It can take years (or decades) to get that card paid off. Plus, you'll end losing hundreds and thousands of extra money in finance charges.
But don't fret! Balance transfers can pull you out from under and have you back on track or debt free.
Grab Hold Of The Lifesaver
If you're finances are a little out of control but you've managed to maintain good credit then you're in luck. Grab a hold of the floatation device and see the light again. You don't have to let revolving credit rule you. Turn the tables and take control of it - benefit from the use of a credit card balance transfer.
Credit card balance transfer terms can vary greatly so it's in your best interest to shop around for the best deal. Many balance transfer cards offer 0% APR on all balance transfers. Some have higher introductory rates from 2% to 9% APR or more.
Balance transfer interest rates usually apply for a limited time. This could be 3 months, 6 months, 9 months or 12 months. Some cards (rare cards) even offer transfer rates for an unlimited number of months. Once the time period has ended, the normal interest rate is applied. This can be anywhere from approximately 9% APR to as high as 30% APR.
Getting Your Head Above Water
Some may compare the use of balance transfers to "robbing Peter to pay Paul." In other words, you shift your money around from one place to another trying to avoid the consequences of poor money management. It may seem like you are handling your situation, when in reality you are not. However, when used carefully, a credit card balance transfer from high interest cards to balance transfer credit cards can give you more breathing room and time to get caught up.
Balance transfer credit cards offer many options, particular for consumers who always carry a balance on their credit or who may be in over the heads with credit card debt. These cards can help you use a credit card balance transfer to get out from under hold of plastic and back in control of your finances. If you're stuck with high interest rates and realize how much money you are losing than balance transfer credit cards are for you. Just be sure not to let the dangerous snare of the plastic monster get a hold of you again.
