The Sims: Livin' Large Expansion Pack List Price: $29.95 Sale Price: $12.73 |
|
This software is BRAND NEW. Packaging may differ slightly from the stock photo above. Please click on our logo above to see over 15,000 titles in stock. Sex and aliens. That's really all that was missing from the amazing original edition of The Sims, and the expansion Livin' Large delivers these new treats to liven up your beloved Sims existence. New characters (including a gladiator and Xena-like warriors), and, more impressively, new decorations are the reasons to buy this game. The furnishings are mostly grouped by theme, with the medieval dungeon option the most authoritative of the bunch. (Little Cassandra Goth has been longing to read by torch light all along.) Our personal favorite is the futuristic theme, with an optional, but expensive, maid/gardener robot to take care of the fabulous modern furnishings. Clearly the Sims team has been doing its research over at Herman Miller, and you'll have a bright red, flowing-foam sofa to show for it. But it wouldn't be The Sims if only good taste prevailed. Bring on the mai tais with a tiki-heavy islander theme. There's also a startling collection of carpeting and objects best grouped under the design ideal we call "demented clown." The attention-getting rarities include: a lame fortune-telling ball (our advice mostly centered around hiring a maid), a voodoo doll for hexing roommates, and a genie who delivers as much bad as good (dead plants, anyone?). And, yes, there's a vibrating bed to give your Sims the spice they've been missing. While the expansion didn't blow us away, it did provide more of the humor and novelty true Sims die-hards will appreciate. With even more attention to detail than the original offering, EA deserves Sims-like applause for this edition. --Jennifer Buckendorff The Sims has sold millions of copies since its release, and now all those virtual voyeurs who bought it have a new bag of tricks to unleash on the unsuspecting inhabitants of their computers. The Livin' Large expansion pack comes with enough new items to buy, careers to pursue, and hilarious secrets to keep fans glued to their monitors until a full-fledged sequel appears. Those of you who missed the phenomenon the first time around will have to buy a copy of the original game in order to use this add-on, but it's worth it. The Sims lets you create an entire neighborhood of digital people who all have their own unique personalities, jobs, relationships, and desires. Livin' Large takes this concept to new extremes, adding mad scientists, magical genies, and even the Grim Reaper to the mix. It also comes with more than 100 new objects to enhance your sims' dwellings. One desperately needed object is the robot maid, who handles all the housework for well-heeled sims, letting its owners focus on more important (and fun) things--such as the new vibra-bed. Considering how many free objects and cool unofficial patches are available on the Internet, is Livin' Large worth the money? Definitely. The enhancements are of professional quality and really add a lot of surreal fun to the game. You also get new features, such as the ability to run five neighborhoods at the same time, and five fun new career paths to explore, such as Slacker and Musician. No fan of The Sims should miss this one. --T. Byrl Baker Pros: Plenty of new items to buy and career paths to explore The ability to run 5 neighborhoods at once will keep you busy Much more humorous than the original release Cons: Some fans may not like the more surreal additions |

Project Origin Run Amok: Alma's Background Fans of the first game will be familiar with the suspenseful story surrounding the psychic Alma, a peculiar and disturbing odyssey that adds depth to her devastating quest for revenge and immediacy to gameplay. Origin began as a secret military project run by the Aramacham Technology Corporation (ATC) . In an experiment run by Alma's own father, her DNA was used to create two clones that possessed her impressive psychic powers in an attempt to engineer a telepathic military commander. In the end, the research team became worried about the dangers of Alma's powers, and they tried to kill her. While her heart stopped beating and her physical body died, her psychic energy continued to exist, and she manifested herself in many forms, including both a child and a deformed adult figure that betrays the gruesomeness of her ordeal. Due to a string of events tied to both her clones, Alma has escaped the disastrous explosion of the last game and the facility where she was held, and the haunting manifestations of her power are at work all around you, adding an unpredictable, nightmarish quality to the world. Strange Events in a Supernatural Setting In order to get anywhere in the rubble of the city of Auburn, you'll need to survive firefights, stay calm in the face of surprisingly graphic events, and uncover the terrifying and mysterious nature of your real enemies. Your character's phenomenal reflexes allow the much-talked-about slow motion effect from the original title to persist here, giving you an edge in combat and adding to the unique nature of your perspective. Improved Details and Enemy AI An enhanced graphics engine means more detailed environments to explore and better effects. The vast destruction in the city opens up a huge variety of spaces and enhances the other-worldly feel of your mission, and you better be ready to stay on guard because all-new enemies powered by improved AI don't just act more realistically than their predecessors, they employ advanced combat tactics and know how to use the environment against you. But they aren't the only ones with more resources at their disposal--additional world interaction enhancements allow you to create cover and protect yourself or remove obstacles from your path. While it may be the horrific action and the details that first catch your eye, the tactical demands and the way story elements are slowly unveiled promise to help keep you interested as gameplay wears on. And for those times when you're not in the mood for a prolonged single-player campaign, this title also offers the ability to battle with or against friends in multiplayer mode. Nox List Price: $49.99 Sale Price: $28.82 |
|
This software is BRAND NEW. Packaging may differ slightly from the stock photo above. Please click on our logo above to see over 15,000 titles in stock. Though cast in the action/RPG game-play style of Diablo, Nox breaks its mold and offers up more than a few pleasant surprises. The third-person isometric perspective offers a refreshing dose of humor, served up by a slick interface and starring very distinct character classes. Much more than a clone, Nox takes the best the genre had and--for the most part--makes it better. Nox's story of a harmless auto mechanic who gets accidentally sucked into a fantasy world immediately sets this game apart from its dark and dour brethren. Nox is funny, and it's refreshing to play an RPG that tries to put a smile on your face. Game play, dungeons, puzzles, and even the story are slightly altered, depending on Jack's class, giving three separate single-player experiences, all leading to the same final showdown with Hecubah. The quests are typical RPG fare--find this, kill that, rescue these guys--spiced up with puzzles relating to the class's abilities or environment. The Nox team's energies went toward creating a game that's fast, fun, and easy to play. It worked. No knock-off, it won't be long before we start seeing games influenced by the innovative designs of Nox. --Mike Fehlauer Pros: Very distinct, fun character classesInnovative action/RPG multiplayer game modesSlick interfaceRefreshing humor Cons: No female charactersUnrealistic inventory systemUninspired magic items Nox is a dark and creepy Action/RPG, set in a bucolic world corrupted by Hecubah, a wicked queen of the undead. In solo play, choose from three different adventures. Follow the path of a warrior, and you will forge your skills and master powerful weapons in the Fortress of Horrendous. Join the ranks of the conjurers in the village of Ix and learn to summon the creatures of the land and control the forces of nature. Or lead the life of a wizard, and use combat magic, stealth, and traps to foil the undead legions. |

Earth Simulator - StudentScholarships.org
On March 11 2002, Japanese engineers had built a computer so powerful that it could keep track of everything in the world all at once. It monitors rain forests in Bolivia, factories in Mexico, the Jet Stream, and the Gulf Stream. The Earth Simulator was designed to create a virtual twin of our home planet. Before this was made, the fastest computer in the world was an American military machine that can perform 7.2 trillion calculations per second. The simulator runs at more than 35 trillion calculations per second. The Earth Simulator was built in Yokohoma and is the size of four tennis courts. It is as powerful as the next twelve super computers in the world put together, and costs about $350 million. By plugging real-life climate data from satellites and ocean buoys into the Earth Simulator, researchers can create a computer model of the entire planet, then scroll it forward in time to see what will happen to our environment. Scientists have already completed a forecast of global ocean temperatures for the next 50 years, and a full set of climate predictions.
Instead of speculating about the possible environmental impact, the Kyoto accord, policymakers will be able to plug its parameters into the virtual Earth, then skip ahead 1,000 years to get a handle on what effect those policies might have. That kind of concrete data could revolutionize environmental science. Scientists feel, by digitally cloning the Earth, there is a high possibility of saving it. The Earth Simulator is especially suited for simulating complex linked systems. The climate is modelled together with water flow on the earth and models of the ocean. The issues of environmental changes has become more and more important during the past decade where pollution became a serious problem threatening the climate and the world we live in. The Earth Simulator consists of 640 super computers that are connected by a high-speed network. Each super computer contains eight vector processors with a peak performance of 8GFlops and a high-speed memory of 16GBytes. The total number of processors is 5120, which translates to a total of about 40TFlops peak performance, and total main memory of 10 Terra Bytes.
Earth Simulator's computing powers enable a 10km mesh grid capability at the equator that allows scientists to model and simulate far smaller clouds than previous super computers. This means more precise weather predictions and the ability to predict typhoon and cyclone paths. Within a few years, scientists expect Earth Simulator's advanced modeling and simulation capabilities to bear fruit. Because of the new super computer, scientists also expect to find new powerful ways to deal with anomalous events such as El Nino, global warming, and long-term changes in the earth's crust and interior.
I believe this is the greatest 21st century invention because this will help resolve problems in the climate and make it easier to determine the Earth's changes. Scientists have tried to solve these issues in the past. Now we can have more information than ever before.
