Bored, bored, bored. That's how young Keith feels about being stranded at the time-worn Mountain View Inn with his parents. Then he meets Ralph, an equally stir-crazy mouse who quickly befriends Keith and begs to ride Keith's toy motorcycle. Soon Ralph masters the tiny two-wheeler and "rrroom-zzzooms" through the hotel hallways, dodging four-legged predators, adults, and the occasional vacuum; he even risks his furry skin to help Keith recover from a high fever. Based on Beverly Cleary's famous children's novel of the same name, this 42-minute video combines live-action talent (including Ray Walston as the wise bellhop) and award-winning stop-motion animation. While the dated look of the TV movie may not appeal to kids who prefer the heart-pumping action of computer-generated favorites such as Small Soldiers, its tame plot and relatively slow pace make The Mouse and the Motorcycle a healthy choice for families with 3- to 7-year-olds. Followed by an even popular sequel, Runaway Ralph. --Liane Thomas

Maturation is a process fraught with insecurity and angst, and Sabrina (Melissa Joan Hart) is experiencing all the normal teenage emotions while simultaneously trying to hide her powers as a witch, and fit in at a normal high school. Imagine her surprise when, on her 17th birthday, Sabrina discovers that on top of her already packed schedule she must somehow find time to study for a test to earn her witch's license. What's worse, her Quizmaster (Alimi Ballard) from the other realm can be counted upon to throw a pop quiz whenever Sabrina least expects it. From mandatory enrollment in witch boot camp to working on the school parade float with her snooty nemesis Libby (Jenna Leigh Green) and joining her class on a field trip to Disneyworld, Sabrina's 17th year yields lots of important lessons about taking responsibility for her actions, nurturing a compassion for others, overcoming jealousy, and identifying the truly important things in her life. Luckily Sabrina's Aunts Hilda (Caroline Rhea) and Zelda (Beth Broderick), talking cat Salem (Nick Bakay), boyfriend Harvey (Nate Richert), and new friend Valerie (Lindsay Sloane) can be counted upon to lend their support and help Sabrina through even the most stressful days. A huge cast of guest stars throughout the 26-episode season include John Ratzenberger as Santa and Johnny Mathis as himself in "Sabrina Claus," Patrick Thomas O'Brien as Cupid in "The Equalizer," and a performance by 10,000 Maniacs in "A River of Candy Corn Runs Through It." (Ages 8 and older) --Tami Horiuchi

Molly Ringwald established herself as the teen queen of the '80s in this fresh comedy. The movie is a day in the life of Samantha, whose 16th birthday is turning out to be anything but sweet. All the traumas of teendom come down on one long day, which sees Samantha surrounded by dithery relatives, mooning over a high school hunk, and pursued by a sawed-off Lothario. Sixteen Candles marked the directing debut of John Hughes, and its goofy energy displayed a promising talent with a great ear for high school lingo ... a promise neglected since Hughes became, after Home Alone, a one-man entertainment industry. There are some pretty crass moments (Why the stereotype of the foreign-exchange student from Asia?), but Ringwald's steady appeal smoothes over the rough spots. As the pubescent, self-styled lady-killer, Anthony Michael Hall turns in a hilarious portrait of a young swinger; he and Ringwald would reteam with Hughes for The Breakfast Club, another key teen picture of the decade. --Robert Horton

The Great Gatsby - Fitzgerald
The title character, Jay Gatsby is a young man who holds a fortune that nobody knows the origin. People presume that he is involved in organized crime, including illegal alcohol and stolen security. Gatsby came from poverty to wealth in order to conquer Daisy’s love. Daisy is a young woman whom he met when in the war; she was a very beautiful but childish, spoilt and selfish person to whom he kept his love. She refused his proposal because “rich girls don’t marry poor boys”. This was the reason why he started getting money. Unfortunately, or not, Daisy did not keep her promise of wait he become rich and married Tom Buchanan. They had a daughter, whom hardly ever appear in the story and is treated by the mother as a doll. There is also Nick Caraway, Daisy’s cousin. He becomes very close to Gatsby and at the end of the story is the one who goes to the funeral with Gatsby’s father. Daisy’s absence in Gatsby’s funeral was because she wanted to avoid gossips and to please her husband; it was the biggest evidence of her selfish attitudes towards reality. It also shows a lack of commitment, it is easier not to take the responsibility of her acts. Yet, if she had gone to his funeral, she would have to face the truth of had committed a murder.
When Nick said, “you can’t repeat the past” he was talking about Daisy, that Gatsby could not live that love the same way he did. However, Gatsby did not agree with Nick, he feeds a dream that only would become true if he could go back to the past. Another interpretation of this citation is that the author did an allusion to the American dream, the dream that had fallen. The truth is that all Daisy loved was nothing but herself. Knowing this, Tom would control Daisy providing all she wanted and then, remembering her that all comes from him. He is her husband. Daisy’s childish behavior is due to her necessity of being seen as a foolish beautiful woman.
The film is full of symbols, for instance, the color Daisy likes most is white, it means purity, and it was Daisy’s desire of being pure on the eyes of society. Another important symbol is the eyes of T.J. Eckleberg, which have a singular meaning in the story. They represent God’s eyes. In fact, I do not think God’s eyes would be the proper meaning but the values of society. The eyes of Eckleberg might have two interpretations. To the lower social classes, it means the eyes of God; to the higher ones it is moral. We should observe the green light in Daisy’s dock, which represents the American dream itself. It is so close but so far, it exists but is only a light, a green light, just like money, green. “Gatsby believed in the green light, the orgastic future that year by year recedes before us.”
The scene of Gatsby’s death is the image of the American dream. In the scene, we can see the colors blue (the pool), red (Gatsby’s blood) and white (the house and the ground around the pool), which are the colors of the flag of U.S.A. Besides, East egg and West egg are opposite to each other; it means that they represent two different things; the main difference is old money versus new money. East egg is the home of aristocracy and wealth, West egg is too, but in West egg is a place of parties, loud music and flashy. The Valley of Ashes is a very poor place represents the poverty.
The main characters of the story have a lot to do with the author’s life. Gatsby represents Fitzgerald and Zelda is Daisy. The main difference is that there is no Tom in the real story. On one hand, the real characters and the imaginary characters are very similar because of the social class differences and the love they fell by one another. On the other hand, they are dissimilar because of the nature they have. Fitzgerald and Zelda had a good nature taking into consideration that Zelda kept the promise of waiting for him until he gets enough money to give her a good life.
I believe the main idea; the theme of this book/film is the death of American dream. All the aspects show a decadent society trying to hide the reality, just as it was in 1920’s in America. Fitzgerald sees the American dream crumbling in the 1920’s. In the story, Daisy represents the wealth, charm, sophistication, and aristocracy that America was losing in that period; at the same time she also represents the amoral values of that time. Gatsby was trying to have it back, just like society was trying to have the American Dream back, but, you can’t repeat the past.
