Released after Vaughan's death in a 1990 helicopter accident, The Sky Is Crying collects unreleased studio tracks from throughout the guitarist's recorded career. In Vaughan's early years, he was a stylist who thought nothing of using ten notes when three would have worked. Rock stardom, cocaine, and alcohol did little to temper his tendency towards overstatement, but by In Step, his last studio album (and first clean-and-sober effort), he'd begun to transcend his many influences to forge a hard-boiled style of his own. The collection documents this passage, starting with unreleased covers of Lonnie Mack's "Wham" and Jimi Hendrix's "Little Wing" from the time of his debut album. "The Sky Is Crying" was originally cut by Elmore James, but Vaughan's lead guitar owes its stylistic debt to the bluesman who had a most profound influence on his playing, Albert King. The highlights are two tracks cut at the time of In Step--the hard-edged "Boot Hill," with Vaughan on slide guitar, and "Life by the Drop," in which Vaughan accompanies himself on acoustic guitar and toasts a life that would end far too soon. --John Milward

In this fractured fairy tale, Jack and Jill have the magic beans and Humpty Dumpty, with the aid of Kitty Softpaws, convinces his old friend Puss in Boots to help him steal the beans so they can climb the beanstalk to get to the golden eggs. Never mind that Humpty Dumpty and Puss in Boots had a falling out years ago, or that Jack and Jill are completely preoccupied by their squabbling over whether or not to have a child--and regardless that Puss in Boots is a wanted cat who's sworn off his thieving ways, and Kitty Softpaws is a cat burglar who works alone. Comedy abounds in this film, not only in the twists and turns of some classic fairy tales gone awry, but with scenes that range from a litter-box dance fight between crowds of cats to Jack expressing his paternal instincts by strapping on a baby carrier filled with a piglet in a diaper, and, of course, Puss in Boots' crafty use of his famous sad eyes to get just what he wants. The animation is top-notch (especially in the mass cat scenes), the music is compelling, and the voice talents of Antonio Banderas, Salma Hayek, Zack Galifianakis, Billy Bob Thornton, and Amy Sedaris are solid. While considered by some to be a prequel of sorts to the four Shrek films, Puss in Boots is definitely a stand-alone spinoff. What the films do share is a common comedic interpretation of some well-known fairy-tale characters and knack for spinning a funny story that appeals to both kids and adults. Blu and Linda both mature as a result of their journey in Rio, and love ensures that life will never be quite the same for either ever again. The animation in Rio is quite impressive, the characters are endearing, the Brazilian music is very appealing, and the star-studded voice cast includes Anne Hathaway, Jesse Eisenberg, Will i Am, Wanda Sykes, Jane Lynch, George Lopez, and Jamie Foxx. While the story doesn't really offer anything new--instead playing much like a rehashing of some of the major plot points from movies like Madagascar, Finding Nemo, and Babe--that doesn't mean the film isn't perfectly entertaining for both kids and adults. At first glance, Bones is a solid crime procedural. But as the series enters its fifth season, it's clear that Bones really works as a romantic drama as well. Not romantic in the mushy sense, but in a way that makes viewers' hearts skip a beat (from joy at seeing a good coupling, not from the shock of all the gory bodies being discovered, examined, and dissected). FBI special agent Seeley Booth (David Boreanaz) and forensic anthropologist Dr. Temperance "Bones" Brennan (Emily Deschanel) have a complicated relationship that gets stronger over time. The writers have done an admirable job in throwing viewers a few bones to hint at what could be for the pair and this is no more evident than in the season premiere, where Booth is given the OK to return to work and Bones returns from a soul-searching trip to Guatemala. And in the 100th episode ("The Parts in the Sum of the Whole"), which Boreanaz directed, the series goes back in time six years to when Booth first met Bones. And it's clear that the two were attracted to each other then, sharing an admiration of solving a case efficiently and correctly. Who knew that decayed bodies could be such a turn-on? There's a lot going on this season, and some of the episodes do fall short. The case revolving around witchcraft doesn't ring true and the quest to ID body parts found in a shark isn't up to par by Bones standards. But overall, the season is a winner. Whether the team is racing against time to deal with a serial killer, finding clues left by a compulsive hoarder, or simply celebrating another wedding, the viewer is left anticipating what comes next. The six-disc set includes all 22 episodes from the fifth season, which originally aired during the 2009-2010 television season. "The Bodies of the Bones" featurette is as fascinating as it is gross and "The Nunchuck Way" special feature is pretty cool. While the gag reel is fun to watch, it at times may leave you wondering if the actors purposely made mistakes simply to put on the DVD. --Jae-Ha Kim
