It's Samantha Baker's sweet sixteen birthday and no one in her family remembers the occasion. She's a typical teen, enduring creepy freshman, spoiled siblings, confused parents and the Big Blonde on campus who stands between her and the boy of her dreams.Item Type: DVD MovieItem Rating: RStreet Date: 09/02/03Wide Screen: yesDirector Cut: noSpecial Edition: noLanguage: ENGLISHForeign Film: noSubtitles: noDubbed: noFull Frame: noRe-Release: noPackaging: Sleeve
Molly Ringwald established herself as the teen queen of the '80s in this fresh comedy. The movie is a day in the life of Samantha, whose 16th birthday is turning out to be anything but sweet. All the traumas of teendom come down on one long day, which sees Samantha surrounded by dithery relatives, mooning over a high school hunk, and pursued by a sawed-off Lothario. Sixteen Candles marked the directing debut of John Hughes, and its goofy energy displayed a promising talent with a great ear for high school lingo ... a promise neglected since Hughes became, after Home Alone, a one-man entertainment industry. There are some pretty crass moments (Why the stereotype of the foreign-exchange student from Asia?), but Ringwald's steady appeal smoothes over the rough spots. As the pubescent, self-styled lady-killer, Anthony Michael Hall turns in a hilarious portrait of a young swinger; he and Ringwald would reteam with Hughes for The Breakfast Club, another key teen picture of the decade. --Robert Horton

Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band - Live in New York City

There's only one better way to experience these performances by Bruce Springsteen and his reunited E Street Band, and that's if you were actually in Madison Square Garden when they were recorded in June and July 2000. This two-disc set includes more than three hours of music. Disc One features the 14 songs that were aired by HBO in 2001, while Disc Two adds another 11 tunes released here for the first time. The Boss and his band are in top form; their sheer exuberance at playing together, not to mention the joy and inspiration they provide their audience, are palpable, thanks in no small part to the excellent direction and superb sound (Dolby Digital 5.1 or PCM stereo). Highlights? Almost everything, from timeless anthems like "Born to Run" and "Thunder Road" to the riveting "American Skin (41 Shots)" and a bluesy, solo "Born in the U.S.A." All together now: Bruuuuuuce! --Sam Graham
Bruce and the band's historical 10-night stand at Madison Square Garden in 2000 has been captured in this dynamic concert program that boasts 80 minutes of additional footage to the original HBO presentation. Songs include "The River," "Atlantic City," "Badlands," "Born to Run," "Land of Hope and Dreams," "Youngstown," and the controversial "American Skin (41 Shots)" 180 min. on two discs. Standard; Soundtracks: English Dolby Digital 5.1, PCM stereo; photo gallery; featurette.

Maxwell's Urban Hang Suite
List Price: $7.99
Sale Price: $4.98

Handsome in his designer clothes and angelic, nappy dreads, Maxwell styles himself a modern-day urban love prophet in the tradition of Marvin Gaye. He concocts a conceptual music suite that purports to tell a fully rounded tale of meaningful love set in the tough but misunderstood inner city. What he delivers, however, contains only the faintest hints of what he promises. Instead we get a whole lot of the same tired R&B elevator slush and lyrics like "Gonna take you in the room suga'/ Lock you up and love for days." Maxwell's Urban Hang Suite is significant only in that it recasts the same old same old as something monumental, and nearly pulls it off. Initially, there's a lot to like about Maxwell: On his openers, "Urban Theme" and "Welcome," the early '80s full-band R&B and jazz pop grooves are reminiscent of Maze's brightest days and Steely Dan's coolest nights. But soon even Maxwell's passionate voice gets lost in a flat mix that turns every song into faceless background music. While R&B is at no loss for suave and sexy personalities to take the stage, a dearth of new ideas keeps the genre for the most part floundering and visionless. In the end, Maxwell's urban hang suite is just another empty room. --Roni Sarig

Except for feature-length animation, the musical has gone the way of the dinosaur. The Walt Disney company took a stab at reviving the live-action musical in 1992 with Newsies, a throwback picture with a curious subject. In 1899, the pint-sized newsboys delivering the New York papers go on strike against the unfair practices of news magnates Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst. The production is heavy on kiddie humor, although Christian Bale (the child star of Spielberg's Empire of the Sun) is charismatic as one of the older leaders of the revolt. The adult stars don't fare as well, with Robert Duvall doddering around as Pulitzer and Ann-Margret and Bill Pullman doing decorative duty. The film was not well received when first released, but hindsight reveals its charm (and allowed the young target audience to catch up with the picture on video). The first-time director is Kenny Ortega, the choreographer of Dirty Dancing, who brings plenty of energy to the action. --Robert Horton
Extra! Extra! Disney proudly presents the 20th anniversary of the classic family musical, Newsies - presented for the first time with an astonishing state-of-the-art digital restoration! Starring Academy Award winners Christian Bale and Robert Duvall and screen favorite Ann-Margaret, Newsies tells the true tale of a courageous group of newsboys in a classic musical style. Enjoy incredible dance sequences brilliantly choreographed by Kenny Ortega (High School Musical) and a riveting story produced by Hollywood legend Alan Menken (Beauty And The Beast). Experience this critically acclaimed film - bursting with unforgettable songs.

This spellbinding documentary takes viewers on an underwater tour of the southwestern Pacific regions, revealing a wide variety of marine life through stunning cinematography. From New Guinea's Coral Triangle to South Australia's Cape Catastrophe and the Great Barrier Reef, this educational film, originally presented in the IMAX 3-D format, also proves marvelously entertaining. Narrated by Jim Carrey; 41 min. Widescreen (Enhanced); Soundtracks: English DTS HD 5.1 Master Audio, Dolby Digital 5.1; Subtitles: English (SDH), Spanish, French; featurettes. Also includes a Blu-ray 3D that requires a 3D television, 3D Blu-ray player, and special glasses to reproduce the original theatrical experience.
Filmed in IMAX 3D, Under the Sea is a strikingly realistic underwater exploration of the amazing sea life of the coral triangle in Papua New Guinea, Indonesia, and the Great Barrier Reef. Viewers instantaneously become divers, immersed in the coral reefs and floating mere inches away from sea life ranging from cuttlefish to venomous sea snakes, nautiluses, sea dragons, and great white sharks. Narrated by a surprisingly sensitive and (mostly) serious Jim Carrey, the film explores everything from how various species use color and pattern changes to communicate to the mating habits of cuttlefish and the symbiotic relationships between sea creatures as varied as the crab and jellyfish. Carrey points out that man's actions have increased the oceans' carbon dioxide levels--a situation which leads to ocean warming and acidification which could potentially upset the symbiotic balance of undersea life and result in dissolving the coral reefs and destroying multiple species of ocean life. The film ends on a hopeful note, declaring that man is beginning to take responsibility for his actions and now possesses the skills to mitigate his effects on the environment and preserve the ocean wonderland. The underwater photography in this film is absolutely stunning and the realism of the 3D format can't be overstated. Viewers of all ages will be mesmerized throughout this 45-minute film and will leave with an important understanding about man's vital role in preserving ocean life. --Tami Horiuchi

Harvey

It's always a small surprise to revisit this movie and realize what a subtly dark performance James Stewart gives as an alcoholic who claims he keeps company with a six-foot-tall, invisible rabbit. As Elwood P. Dowd, the actor emits a faint whiff of decay and spirits, yet Stewart also embraces Dowd's romanticism and grace with splendid ease. Based on a hit play and directed by Henry Koster, the film is terribly funny at times, especially whenever Elwood decides it's only polite to introduce Harvey to complete strangers. The supporting cast can't be beat. --Tom Keogh

Nike Dunk Hi Pro Sb Supreme Blue
Nike SB Supreme Blue is one of the products in the 'High' Nike's product family. This is a huge family, and one which is still growing, with other siblings including the likes of the military colored Nike Dunk Custom High Oreos Paris, the rather high Nike Dunk Dinosaur Junior, the rather colorful Custom Nike High - Back to the Future II Horrible Pack and the Nike 6.0 Dunk High Black Coral; to name but a few of the numerous 'High' Nike Dunks. Of all Nike Dunks that I have gotten to use over my lifetime - and they are quite a number - I have to confess that it is Nike Supreme Blue that I have gotten most enchanted with.
Although classified as a 'high' dunk, Nike High Pro SB Supreme Blue is not such a tall shoe, and it could just as well qualify to be termed as 'mid' dunk. It is perhaps the gradual, but unabating gain gradient, from the front part of the shoe where the toes go in to peak at the middle section of the shoe (where the tip of its 'tongue' is located) which qualifies it to be considered a 'high' dunk. This strong gradient does make the shoe look taller than it really is. It also helps, in building a perception of superior height, that the sole on Nike High Pro SB Supreme Blue is rather thick - though not particularly conspicuously so.
Contrary to what its name suggest, Nike SB Supreme Blue is in fact not a primarily blue shoe. Indeed, on my particular pair of this shoe, the primary color is white, with blue only making a brief appearance towards the back of the shoe. The bottom part of the sole, the part that is in contact with the ground is colored red, with the upper part of the sole, the part where it is joined to the upper body of the shoe being colored white. Most of the front part of this shoe is white too; including the part where the toes are supposed to go in, the tongue of the 'shoe,' and the main patch which connects the various parts of the shoes' body. The Nike tick on the Nike High Supreme Blue is, however, red in color.
The Nike tick on Nike Supreme Blue is, as in all modern Nikes, quite elongated; stretching all the way to the back of the shoe, and going round to emerge at the opposite end of the shoe. This can be seen as a signature, to show that Nike SB Supreme Blue is indeed a 'modern' Nike.
