French Impressions, Joshua Bell's first recital program for Sony Classical features the Grammy Award-winning violinist and his longtime friend and recital partner, pianist Jeremy Denk, offering a passionately nuanced interpretation of works by Saint-Saens, Ravel and Franck. When Bell and Denk performed Saint-Saens Violin Sonata No. 1 in D Minor during their 2010 recital tour, the New York Times raved "Mr. Bell and Mr. Denk gave a passionate performanceThere were plenty of fireworks in the whirlwind of the concluding movement."Says Bell, "French Impressions is the culmination of my last decade of exploration and performance with pianist Jeremy Denk, and I hope that with this recording we can affect the listener with the same joy and spiritual enrichment that these masterpieces have provided us over the years."Repertoire: Bell's first recording of Cesar Franck's Violin Sonata in A Major allows Bell to pay homage, through his mentor Josef Gingold, to the two great artists who created this undying masterpiece. It was written 125 years ago, at the height of the French Belle Epoque, for the wedding of Franck's friend, the virtuoso Eugene Ysaye (with whom Gingold studied). In his music, Franck captured everything about the time: life, love, passion. While the Franck piece has the biggest reputation, the Saint-Saens remains one of the most exciting sonatas in the repertoire, richly sensual within a formal scheme that Beethoven would recognize. The feverish finale is guaranteed to bring the house down. Ravel's more fantastic sonata, by turns ethereal, earthy, abstract and sensual, offers a kaleidoscope of different thrills. Produced by multiple Grammy Award-winner Steven Epstein.

They skydive, they kickbox, they travel through space. Is there anything these crayon-colored teens can't do? The answer seems a resounding "no," until some construction workers unwittingly open a manhole cover and loose Ivan Ooze upon Angel Grove. Although incarcerated in his egglike tomb for 6,000 years, Ooze gets right to work at that world domination thing. First up: Strip those eager teens of their morphin uniforms and associated powers and send their leader Zordon to his crystalline deathbed. There's nothing to do but head for a distant planet to meet up with a bikini-clad warrior babe who imparts ancient wisdom and power. Meanwhile, Ooze has been turning parents into zombies who craft giant metallic insects--all the better to take over the world with. This 90-minute film features some cast changes from the Fox television series, as well as better special effects and extended fight scenes, which account for the PG rating. Parents must weigh in for themselves on the famous violent-influence-or-not question. Although, like anything else, what seemed violent in 1995 may seem a bit tame today. Most critics complain Back in Black, the album AC/DC recorded after the death of their original lead screamer Bon Scott, is ridiculously juvenile, obvious, snickering, bludgeoning, derivative, single-minded about sex and booze, a big cartoon. All true, of course, and--on rock 'n' ragers like "What Do You Do For Money Honey," "You Shook Me All Night Long," and the title track--all great. As Scott's replacement Brian Johnson reminds us, loud and crunchy, no-holds-barred "rock and roll ain't noise pollution...it makes good, good sense." Never trust anyone who refuses to drink domestic beer, laugh at the Three Stooges, or crank Back in Black. --David Cantwell

There's an extra coat of hot wax on Pixar's vibrant, NASCAR-influenced comedy about a world populated entirely by cars. Lightning McQueen (voiced by Owen Wilson) is the slick rookie taking the Piston Cup series by storm when the last race of the season (the film's high-octane opening) ends in a three-way tie. On the way to the tie-breaker race in California, Lightning loses his way off Route 66 in the Southwest desert and is taught to stop and smell the roses by the forgotten citizens of Radiator Springs. It's odd to have such a slim story from the whizzes of Pixar, and the film pales a bit from their other films (though can that be a fair comparison?). Nonetheless, Cars is another gleaming ride with Pixar founder John Lasseter, who's directing for the first time since Toy Story 2. There's the usual spectrum of excellent characters teamed with appropriate voice talent, loads of smooth humor for kids and parents alike, knockout visuals, and a colorful array of sidekicks, including a scene-stealing baby blue forklift named Guido. Lightning's plight is changed with the help of former big-city lawyer Sally Carrera (Pixar veteran Bonnie Hunt), the town's patriarch Doc Hudson (Paul Newman), and kooky tow truck Mater (Larry the Cable Guy). The Incredibles was the first Pixar film to break the 100-minute barrier, but had enough story not to suffer; Cars, at 116 minutes (including some must-see end credit footage), is not as fortunate, plus it never pierces the heart. Trivia fans should have bonanza with the frame-by-frame DVD function; the movie is stuffed with in-jokes, some appearing only for an instant. Ages 5 and up. --Doug Thomas

TINKER BELL AND THE LOST TREASURE - Blu-Ray Movie

Tinkerbell is back for a whole new season of adventure in Tinkerbell and the Lost Treasure. Pixie Hollow is all abuzz with preparations for autumn and Tinkerbell is hard at work on her latest invention when she is unexpectedly summoned by Queen Clarion and the Minister of autumn. Tinkerbell fears that she's in trouble again, but is instead delighted to find out that Fairy Mary has recommended her for the important job of creating a one-of-a-kind scepter that will focus the light of an unusual blue harvest moon through a rare moonstone in order to replenish the pixie dust tree's supply of pixie dust. Tinkerbell gladly rises to the challenge, accepting her dust-keeper friend Terrence's offers of help, but as the days fly rapidly by, pressure begins to build and Tinkerbell becomes annoyed by Terrence's constant attention. Sending Terrence away on an errand seems like a good idea, but what he brings back inadvertently causes the almost finished scepter and the incredibly rare moonstone to break into pieces. Tinkerbell lashes out at Terrence and then departs alone on a desperate quest to fix the moonstone. What Tinkerbell learns on her journey is that she must take responsibility for her own actions and that the power and value of true friendship is much greater than she'd ever imagined. Like the first Tinkerbell, the colors and clarity of animation are simply breathtaking in this production, but the story lags somewhat thanks to a lengthy set up and a general lack of suspense in the first half of the film. Still, it's a perfectly entertaining movie that will delight children ages 3 and up as well as satisfy most parents. Returning voice talent includes Mae Whitman, Kristin Chenoweth, Jane Horrocks, Anjelica Huston, Jesse McCartney, and Raven-Symone. --Tami HoriuchiStills from Tinker Bell and the Lost Treasure

The film that officially signaled Disney's animation renaissance (following The Little Mermaid) and the only animated feature to receive a Best Picture Oscar nomination, Beauty and the Beast remains the yardstick by which all other animated films should be measured. It relates the story of Belle, a bookworm with a dotty inventor for a father; when he inadvertently offends the Beast (a prince whose heart is too hard to love anyone besides himself), Belle boldly takes her father's place, imprisoned in the Beast's gloomy mansion. Naturally, Belle teaches the Beast to love. What makes this such a dazzler, besides the amazingly accomplished animation and the winning coterie of supporting characters (the Beast's mansion is overrun by quipping, dancing household items) is the array of beautiful and hilarious songs by composer Alan Menken and the late, lamented lyricist Howard Ashman. (The title song won the 1991 Best Song Oscar, and Menken's score scored a trophy as well.) The downright funniest song is "Gaston," a lout's paean to himself (including the immortal line, "I use antlers in all of my de-co-ra-ting"). "Be Our Guest" is transformed into an inspired Busby Berkeley homage. Since Ashman's passing, animated musicals haven't quite reached the same exhilarating level of wit, sophistication, and pure joy. --David Kronke --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

New Tools & New Rules: Restaurants and Social Media?

If you think social media sites like Twitter, You Tube, Facebook, or Yelp are not important to you as a restaurant operator, hopefully  I can convince you that you are dead wrong.

Last week Nielson Online, the company that tracks online activity, reported that time spent on social networking sites is up 83 percent in the United States compared to just a year ago.   This is means that more of your current and potential customers are spending an increasing amount of time online.

One logically conclusion to be drawn from this trend is that restaurateurs must understand the new tools and rules of online social media, if they want to engage and influences their growing tech savvy audiences.   Equally important is the need to understand social media as a means of defending against its dark side.  This will require that you pay attention to what's being said about you and your brand; and that, you engage directly in the conversations.

Social Media's Dark Side

If you are like most restaurants, I am sure you have a great website complete with smiling service staff, sparkling clean cooks, and great food photos.  Now what difference will any of this make, if a YouTube search of your company's name turns up a homemade video of a rodent infested kitchen posted by a disgruntle former employee.  Never mind  that the footage is fake, five years old, or from a restaurant with a similar name.   Your reputation is the one at risk.

This may sound unbelievable, but major brands like Taco Bell and Burger King have been faced with very embarrassing issues recently.  In February of 2007 Yum Brands, the parent company of Taco Bell and KFC made national headlines when someone posted a video of rats running about in one of their New York locations.   In August of 2008 Burger King attracted similar attention one when of their employees was videotaped taking a bath in the restaurant's kitchen dish sink during the end of his shift.

Although both of these large fast-food operators have survive their brushes with social media, the scares are a permanent part of the internet's memory.  One way to ensure that you are in a position to protect your reputation and brand is to be engage with your customers before something bad happens.  It is much easier for you to be heard and believed when you have already established a relationship with your online audience.  This is one compelling reason to embrace sites such as YouTube, Twitter, and Facebook.

Social Media's Enlightened Opportunity

Social Media sites have also proven to be a very effective way to build, excite, and connect with a loyal following of customers and fans of your business.  This enlightened side of social media is probably the most important reason any restaurant operator would devote valuable resources to the subject.   I believe that restaurants have merely scratch the surface of ways to promote and grow their businesses online and through social media.

Take the story of Kogi's Taco Truck for example.  The owners of the Los Angeles based mobile Korean Taco Truck recently started using Twitter to attract and communicate with customers.  In a matter of months the business has attracted national media attention and more than 30,000 Twitter followers.  Reports have been made of long lines of customers waiting, when Tweets(Twitter Posts) are sent announcing their pending arrival.   Kogi's has definitely found a creative way of putting social media to a positive use.

In a similar fashion Panera Bread has incorporated one of the common uses of social media, "MeetUps" into its own online site.  MeetAtPanera.com allows consumers to schedule lunch or meetings at a local locations by sending electronic invites directly from the site.  This no doubt reinforces Panera's image as an inviting place for groups to get together.  This counts as another clever use of social media's new tools.

Given all of the above, I am not suggesting that the fundamentals of restaurant marketing have changed.  The goals of generating guest traffic and customer loyalty are the same.  The need to focus on branding, advertising, and promoting your products and services hasn't changed either.  The dramatic shift is occurring with the "Tools" available to restaurant operators and the "Rules" of the game.  Ignoring these changes would be like a Buggy Whip Makers ignoring the invention of the car.  A better approach is to embrace the opportunities offered by social media and creatively shape them in enlighten ways. .  Also see the recent Restaurant and Institutions article for more tips.
