By now, everyone knows how adventurous Radiohead are, which makes this live record--a hairy rock-band cliché--seem like a strange capper to their decidedly cliché-rejecting records. But throughout the hubbub surrounding Kid A, and its Amnesiac companion piece, Radiohead never embraced the notion that they're reinventing anything. Even while a tempest of critics hailed the band as saviors, pulling rock from the jaws of consumerist self-destruction, the band ignored it all, going into stadiums and working out their twisted angst through angry, direct means. "National Anthem"'s fuzzed-out riff rages aggressively behind Thom Yorke's crazed, breath-scat vocal, giving the song a rollicking edge that was nowhere on Kid A. The same effect is heard on "Idioteque," as Yorke, getting backup vocal help from the crowd, sings over an acoustic beat, removing the distant, electronic touch of the studio version. "True Love Waits" aptly ends the record with Yorke and a solo acoustic guitar, which finds just the right touch on a song that Radiohead have played with for years (long-term fans should note the first ever appearance on record of the track). In the end, Radiohead don't really stray too far from the original templates of these songs, they merely play up the highs and milk the lows, just like any good rock band should. -- Matthew Cooke RADIOHEAD I MIGHT BE WRONG - LIVE RECORDINGS |

December List Price: $17.98 Sale Price: $4.20 |

December holds the distinction of single-handedly putting Windham Hill on the map and being the new age album most likely to find its way into music collections of all ilk. In spite of being relentlessly overplayed during the holidays, the solo piano recording has aged quite well. Winston shapes holiday war-horses and original compositions into a captivating contemporary statement. His spare, understated style captures the feel of the dark season, employing ample resonance to evoke a reflective spaciousness. The album's straightforward simplicity conveys both the celebration and quietude that characterize the best of the Yuletide spirit. --Richard Price Our Seller's Notes and Fine Print :...From Windham Hill, in good shape...Buy it today, have it in four days... |

A vibrant look at the magical world of fairies and the wonder of the changing seasons, Tinker Bell is the captivating story of one of Disney's most beloved fairies. Pixie Hollow is a land where fairies constantly create and improve upon the beauty of the four seasons and prepare to bring the changing seasons to the mainland. When Tinker Bell is born, she discovers she is destined to be a Tinker fairy; one who invents gadgets to help fairies do their jobs more efficiently, but she is disappointed with her supporting role and yearns for a more impressive job. While her fellow fairies assure her that she plays a vital role in the arrival of spring, Tinker Bell shuns her calling and attempts to become something she's not. In the end, Tinker Bell's efforts cause a disaster that threatens to delay or even cancel the coming of spring and only inspiration and a firm belief in her own strengths can lead Tinker Bell to fulfill her destiny and save spring. This CGI product ion features truly breathtaking vividness and clarity, does a great job of portraying the world of nature from a fairy's perspective, and creates a nice sense of consistency between its final frames and the opening of the original Peter Pan film. Other DVD bonus features include the interactive "Tinker Trainer" game, tour of the realms of Pixie Hollow, a look at how fairies put the wonder in the world around us, Selena Gomez's music video "Fly To Your Heart," and deleted scenes. Introduction to XML [VHS] |
|
What is XML, and why should you care? These questions are thoroughly answered in Introduction to XML, a tight 80-minute program featuring several big names in XML development, such as Tim Bray and Microsoft's Jean Paoli. Amazingly, a six-chapter tape on programming narrated by programmers holds the interest of a nontechnical audience, but the producers know who their audience is, and they narrow their focus accordingly. Managers and executives can easily learn why XML is a powerful standard and what benefits it brings to businesses and other organizations that choose to implement it. As we move into an age in which information is a kind of currency, we are finding it increasingly important to transfer that currency more easily; XML is the mint of the future. Find out why, and get your business lined up with the rest of the world by viewing Introduction to XML. --Rob Lightner |

The Polar Express (Widescreen Edition) List Price: $14.96 Sale Price: $3.79 |
|
|
Destined to become a holiday perennial, The Polar Express also heralded a brave new world of all-digital filmmaking. Critics and audiences were divided between those who hailed it as an instant classic that captures the visual splendor and evocative innocence of Chris Van Allsburg's popular children's book, and those who felt that the innovative use of "performance capture"--to accurately translate live performances into all-digital characters--was an eerie and not-quite-lifelike distraction from the story's epic-scale North Pole adventure. In any case it's a benign, kind-hearted celebration of the yuletide spirit, especially for kids who have almost grown out of their need to believe in Santa Claus. Tom Hanks is the nominal "star" who performs five different computer-generated characters, but it's the visuals that steal this show, as director Robert Zemeckis indulges his tireless pursuit of technological innovation. No matter how you respond to the many wonders on display, it's clear that The Polar Express represents a significant milestone in the digital revolution of cinema. If it also fills you with the joy of Christmas (in spite of its Nuremberg-like rally of frantic elves), so much the better. --Jeff Shannon The World of The Polar Express The book by Chris Van Allsburg The Soundtrack The Magic Journey (Polar Express the Movie) (book) Stills from Polar Express (click for larger image) Co-written and directed by Robert Zemeckis, this heartwarming computer-animated holiday tale, based on Chris Van Allsburg's book, centers on a young boy whose belief in Santa Claus is beginning to waver. Lying awake on Christmas Eve, he hears the rumble of a locomotive outside his home. Boarding the train with a host of other children, he embarks on a thrilling adventure bound for the North Pole. Tom Hanks, Michael Jeter, Nona Gaye, Eddie Deezen, and Peter Scolari provide live-action performances that were later digitized. 100 min. Widescreen (Enhanced); Soundtracks: English Dolby Digital 5.1, French Dolby Digital 5.1, Spanish Dolby Digital 5.1; Subtitles: English, French, Spanish. |

Moon List Price: $14.99 Sale Price: $7.98 |
|
Science fiction can encompass many genres--suspense, horror, action-adventure, romance, even comedy--but director Duncan Jones's Moon doesn't fit neatly into any of them. This smart, provocative film has no aliens or cool spaceships, and the effects (mostly consisting of model vehicles lumbering across the lunar surface) aren't all that special; instead, the material is character- and story-driven, centering on an excellent, multilayered performance by Sam Rockwell. The scene is some undetermined point in the future. Rockwell plays Sam Bell, an employee of Lunar Industries, the company responsible for mining a fusion energy source called Helium-3, which is vital to Earth's efforts to reverse a serious energy crisis and can only be found on the far side of the Moon. Sam is all by himself, and as he nears the end of his three-year contract, the solitude is starting to get to him ("Three years is a long haul," he says. "Way, way, way too long. I'm talking to myself on a regular basis"); his only contact with his wife and daughter back home comes through the occasional video messages he exchanges with them, while his sole interaction on the Moon is with GERTY 3000, a computer voiced by Kevin Spacey (and an obvious parallel to 2001: A Space Odyssey's HAL 9000). Things start to go seriously sideways when Sam crashes his vehicle while out inspecting one of the giant Helium-3 harvesters. He comes to in the base infirmary, seemingly none the worse for the wear; but an unnerving surprise awaits him when he goes back to check out the accident site, and the resulting complications occupy the rest of the movie. Fans of 2001, Solaris, and other cerebral sci-fi will enjoy figuring out what's going on; others will find it slow-moving and tedious. Either way, Moon, which was made quickly and on a relatively low budget, is well worth a look. --Sam Graham Sam Bell (Sam Rockwell) is at the end of a three-year tour as the lone inhabitant of a lunar outpost that harvests a clean fuel source to send back to Earth. His only companion is GERTY (voiced by Kevin Spacey), the station's robot. Following an accident caused by isolation-induced hallucinations, Sam encounters another version of himself and must work to uncover the truth behind the existence of this mysterious double. Dominique McElligott co-stars in this thought-provoking sci-fi thriller. 97 min. Widescreen (Enhanced); Soundtracks: English Dolby Digital 5.1, French Dolby Digital 5.1; Subtitles: English (SDH), French; audio commentary; featurettes. |

The Forsyte Saga, Series 1 List Price: $59.99 Sale Price: $27.49 |
|
Granada Television's adaptation of The Forsyte Saga achieved the seemingly impossible in spring 2002, matching the BBC's 35-year-old black-and-white classic version with a richly cast and superbly directed take on John Galsworthy's first two novels. The success of these six 90-minute episodes proved that despite the current emphasis on miniseries and dramas developed around the hot actor of the moment, our appetite--and attention span--still craves ensemble pieces that are given space and time to develop. It also demonstrates that nothing generates television gold like a compelling family drama crammed with lust, rape, class conflict, and the insuperable power of money. The Forsyte Saga is nothing if not superior soap opera. It could all have gone horribly wrong, haunted by the specter of its BBC predecessor--a television legend for anyone over 40. Instead, it succeeds entirely on its own merits with scarcely a weak link--from Stephen Mallatratt's taut and fluid script to David Moore's carefully measured, seamless direction. Risks were taken to banish the old ghosts, particularly in the casting. Damian Lewis's repressed Soames and Gina McKee as his ill-matched bride, the enigmatic Irene, are inspired choices delivering complex portraits of unhappy, damaged human beings who deserve our sympathy. In a sea of marvelous cameos and splendid acting, the top honors go to Corin Redgrave and Rupert Graves for their hauntingly sensitive interpretations of old and young Jolyon, as well as to Amanda Root for her increasingly exasperated Winifred and Gillian Kearney for her sharply intelligent and worldly June. --Piers Ford FORSYTE SAGA SERIES 1 - DVD Movie |

Which of These Computer Performance Tips are you Ignoring?
Copyright (c) 2008 Jason Bell
These days, living without a computer is totally unacceptable. This is because the computer has integrated into our day-to-day lives, and it's where people turn to whenever they have a problem or simple question. And since we all want our problems solved quickly, a sluggish PC just won't do -- as it simply can't keep up with our regularly changing commands and requests. In light of that fact, the best way to get your computer to optimum performance is to familiarize yourself with some of the most effective system performance tips -- And luckily for you, some of those tips are directly below.
Regular Software Updates
------------------------
Rather than being infected with spyware or a virus, sometimes a computer just needs a software update. If certain applications/programs are running slower than usual or not responding as quickly as they once did, you may need to upgrade your software drivers. Software is constantly being outdated and recreated, so it isn't unheard of that you might be using an outdated driver. Simply visit the developers website and download the latest version of your software.
Anti-Virus & Anti-Spyware Checks
--------------------------------
Although there are many reasons why a computer might become sluggish and behave erratically, viruses and spyware are the most obvious of the culprits. By regularly running checks and having active protection, malicious software will have a very tough time trying to penetrate through your defenses. Less viruses & spyware means better overall performance.
Hard-Disk Clean Up
------------------
Every computer comes with it's own set of performance enhancing tools -- located in Program Files, Accessories, and then System Tools. Disk clean up and disk defrag will be your most used tools, as they can help clean up and get rid of all unnecessary files. These tools will help to arrange your PC's data more effectively, allowing for drastically smoother performance. Use these tools regularly; at least weekly or bi-weekly.
Registry Cleaning
-----------------
If there was a command center in your computer, this would be it. The registry is where all actions are logged and where the computer obtains the information it needs at any given moment. Unfortunately, because it is so active and is receiving information on a constant basis, errors frequently accumulate. These errors remain in the registry and continue to build & build until they are removed with registry repair software. If these errors are allowed to accumulate unwatched, severe performance issues are the inevitable result; and in some cases, permanent damage to your hardware. To prevent these errors from building up to dangerous levels, regularly run registry cleaning software.
Follow these system performance tips and you will be well on your way to 100% computer efficiency. Either that, or just let your computer fall apart -- It's up to you!

I was given a used computer. A bell rings often and I don't know why or how to stop it. Help please?
I can't figure out what is making it. I know how sounds come and go as you get an email, someone signs into IM or something like that but I can't figure this one out.
I can't figure it out. Can you give more details like how it sounds? Is it beeps as soon as the computer boots up? May be a sound of low battery power?
