Basic Primer

A basic primer for starting a career in the facilities maintenance field

A basic primer for starting a career in the facilities maintenance field

Ok so you’re new to the facilities maintenance field, or hope to be, and you have stumbled across this article and hope that it can help you land that position in the maintenance field. It can if you are brutality honest about your abilities and willingness to learn.

You will need to address several areas of concern. The first  being why should  the company pick you for its maintenance position from the thousands of applications? What makes you stand out from the crowd? Even if you had the special facility maintenance skills the employer was looking for how will you be noticed for further consideration? Well? If the answer isn’t all ready spewing forth from your lips you have some practice and training to do.

Getting your application noticed

You should appreciate  two things here. The first being the word application, the second being the word noticed. If you’re just entering the field  (hopefully you will be soon) you won’t have a resume yet. This may even be you’re very first job. If you follow this advice your application  will be noticed and selected for review. If you have ANY experience working with anything mechanical put  it down on your application. It could be anything from helping to restore that old car to doing projects around the house, painting , sawing wood, landscaping work etc The point here is that you have some experience with hand tools and are able to follow directions to get a job done. List references that the facility  maintenance manager can check. Be sure to include phone numbers. Let the references that you have listed know what facility job you have applied for so that they will be prepared to let the maintenance manager know that how your skills fit the position they are trying to fill. Sounds easy? Not so fast! You have more preparation to do.

What is the employer looking for?

Read the ad very carefully and make sure that  you are well versed on what the employer is looking for. Did the ad mention painting? What do you know about painting? You need to be prepared and do your home work for that interview that is coming up. Look up painting on the internet. Find out about the basic types of paint, example; oil based, latex, acrylic etc. Find out about basic painting preparations such as set up, taping off, rolling, types of rollers, clean up etc. You get the point.

The first job I obtained was with a new hotel as a facility maintenance worker at a large hotel . The ad stated that the hotel was looking for a facility maintenance engineer with experience in swimming pools among other skills. Did I have any experience in swimming pools?  No I didn’t but I prepared my self for the interview that I knew I would get a shot at. I prepared. I looked up swimming pools filters and memorized the different types and the basics on swimming pool care. I looked up information about the hotel, how many rooms, what kind of facilities it offered. You need to do your research so you will be comfortable and appear knowledable about the duties the employer is asking you to fulfill.

Persistence.

Be persistent. After you have submitted your application wait a couple of days and call back. Ask if they are in receipt of your application. Ask if there is any thing else that they need to know or if you can help in any way. Ask to speak with the maintenance hiring manager if your application went to the Human Resource department. If the department manager is unavailable leave a message. Be sure to include a telephone number and a time you can be reached. If you haven’t heard back in several days call again. Managers are very busy and hiring is among the least pleasant of their duties.

and yes i will pick a best answer if i like what i see!
and wat goes on first?????

Face:
*Moisturizer: This should ALWAYS be applied to the face daily. As well, moisturizers should carry an spf factor of 15 to protect your skin from the sun's damaging rays and be oil-free so that it will not clog pores. Not only will this hydrate your skin, but it will give your skin a healthy, nourished look. You should apply the moisturizer after you have washed your face, and let it absorb for about 5 minutes before you put any primer or makeup on.
*Primer: Prepares the skin for the actual makeup. It mainly creates a base for your skin, and is used right before you apply foundation to make your makeup last much longer. This should primarily be used if you have excessively oily skin.
*Foundation: This can come in many forms: liquid, cream, whipped, aerosal, and powder. As well, it offers light to heavy coverage. Foundation is used all over your face and neck to just even out your complexion of any blotchiness or redness.
*Concealer: This is used for extra- heavy duty coverage that your foundation wouldn't be able to cover up. These areas include large pimples, moles, and dark undereye circles. It is a more thicker and concentrated product than the foundation, and can come in either liquid or cream form. You should apply this after you have applied your foundation.
*Powder: This is mainly used to finish up your makeup application. After putting on foundation and/or concealer, powder can be lightly applied with a fluffy brush over your makeup to mattify and set the makeup. This can either come in pressed or loose powder form.

Eyes:
*Eyelash Curler: First Choose a good quality metal lash curler as these work the best and last the longest. Then, when you want to curl your lashes, make sure you tilt your head back and relax your eyes. Slowly bring the eyelash curler to your eyes and bring the top metal part as close to the top lashline as possible. Then, gently squeeze the clamp and hold for 15 seconds. Release the clamp and apply a curling and lengthening mascara immediately to set your lashes. Simply stroke the mascara wand in a "wigglying" motion throughout your lashes to coat each one with the product. After 3 coats, you should be good to go.
*Liquid Eyeliner: This is the hardest eye makeup to use. The easiest way to apply it is to apply tiny dots along your lashline and after, connecting them. (It's like connecting the dots to form a picture in your coloring book ; connecting the dots are a lot more easier than drawing the picture from scratch). For added drama, you can "wing' out the eyeliner ; you do this by thickening the line as you draw the line outward.
*Pencil Eyeliner: This stuff is the easiest to use. Basically just apply the stuff into your lashline from the inner corner to the outer corner. Next, get a q-tip and smudge over the line that you just drew for a more natural softer look.
*Eyeshadow: Cream eyeshadows are wonderful and easy to use and look the most natural. This stuff is not powder so it will not look powdery at all. Basically, you just dab on a bit of the cream eyeshadow with your ring finger and blend it onto your eyelid. This will be very subtkle and pretty. If you still want to use eyeshadow powder however, I suggest you use an eyeshadow brush instead of the sponge-tip applicator that comes with the makeup. This distributes the product a lot more evenly and naturally.
*Tweezing tips: Here is a website you can check out to for a detailed instruction on tweezing:
http://www.ehow.com/how_2824_pluck-eyebrows.html

Lips:
*Lipgloss: this is really easy. Just unscrew the wand from the lipgloss tube and swipe over the lips. Just use enough to coat the lips evenly.
*Lipliner: this can be used to give the apperance of more larger lips. Just get a nude lipliner and apply it to the outside of your lipline and fill it in. Then get your lipgloss and go over the lipliner.

Tools other than eyelash curler:
*Foundation Brush
*Concealer/ Cream Brush
*Fluffy Brush
*Blush Brush
*Lip brush
*Angle Brush'
*Eyeliner Brush
*Eyeshadow Brush
*Eyepencil Sharpener
*Makeup Sponges
*Q-Tips

Instructions:
1. Apply moisturizer
2. Apply foundation to even out skin with fingers, a foudnation brush, or with a makeup sponge.
3. Apply concealer on really noticeable trouble areas that the foundation couldn't cover up. Use your ring finger or a concealer brush.
4. Apply eyeliner to your eyes. Smudge it in with q-tip
5. With a cream shadow brush or your ring finger, apply a cream taupe shadow on your eye lid. Try Revlons Skinlights Creme Shadow ($10)
6. Curl your eyelashes with lash curler and apply mascara. A good pic is Mascara Sky High Curves Mascara ($7)
7. Swipe on a pale pink lipgloss like Bonnebelles ($4) and your good to go.
8. For added glow, apply some blush to the apples of your cheeks. This will just give you a healthy rosy complexion that can brighten you up. Try Covergirls Blush in Baby Pink ($6)

***By the way, makeup can be really really expensive, and plus VERY VERY VERY unnecessary. Please consider your natural beauty and not get in the hype of makeup - its time consuming, and takes a toll on your cash funds. Plus, guys like girls who are naturally beautiful and aren't cakefaces. So please just follow the simple instructions I layed out above, and avoid going overboard on the makeup.
