This intense first feature by actor-turned-director Todd Field daringly ventures into an emotionally unsettling minefield of family and romantic relationships gone dangerously wrong. Field, hailed for his masterful touch with the difficult material, shrewdly chose Thomas Newman to score the film. Known almost as much for what's not in his frequently modernistic scores--i.e. traditional dramatic themes and overwrought orchestral sentimentality--Newman once again follows his experimental muse to great effect here. The work is considerably less percussive than similar compositions he's attempted, and he succeeds by a less-is-more strategy that's unafraid to let spare piano notes hang in the air like haunting spirits or concoct intriguing, inscrutable studio-enhanced sound washes conjured from acoustic and electronic sources. But that's not to say Newman's operating from formula: the understated strings of "Baseball" betray a masterful understanding of tradition, and three a cappella choral cues performed by the Newark Balkan Chorus impart yet another compelling layer of humanity to the score. The scion of Hollywood scoring legend Alfred Newman again shows his musical instincts are all his own as he continues to gratifyingly redefine the art of modern film scoring. --Jerry McCulley |

Stepping up to the plate in this six-episode HBO series, comedy's newest It Boy, Danny McBride (The Foot Fist Way, Pineapple Express, Tropic Thunder), hits it out of the park as Kenny Powers, a former baseball phenom, who, after spending his millions and burning all bridges, returns to his high school to teach physical education. The delusional Powers (he still wears a mullet!) insists that he will return to the majors. Until then, he makes a play for his former high school flame (Katy Mixon), now an art teacher who is engaged to the boring, by-the-book principal (Andrew Daly). He runs roughshod over his brother and his disapproving wife (John Hawkes and Jennifer Irwin), who allow Powers to live with them and their children. He lures the idolizing nerdy band teacher to the dark side. Eastbound and Down has an odd sense of humor. To say that the foul-mouthed, substance-abusing Powers is "inappropriate" is an understatement. He makes Billy Bob Thornton's Bad Santa look like Edmund Gwenn in Miracle on 34th Street). When one of his students repeats his father's claim that Powers ruined baseball, Powers tells the class, "Anybody want to pick on anybody in class, aim for him, because I ain't watching." Eastbound and Down benefits from some big league talent. Will Ferrell, who helped get The Foot Fist Way into theatres, appears as a car salesman who wants to exploit what's left of Powers' celebrity with predictably disastrous results. Episodes were directed by McBride collaborator Jody Hill (Observe and Report), David Gordon Green (Superbad), and Ferrell's partner in comedy, Adam McKay (Talladega Nights, Anchorman). There are other obnoxious characters on television, but Kenny Powers is in a league of his own, and he may take some warming up to. But McBride imbues this extreme character with an uncompromised integrity that is oddly admirable. Despite what his brother tells him at one point, Powers is someone you like being around. --Donald LiebensonStills from Eastbound and Down- The Complete First Season (click for larger image) All six episodes from the first season are featured in a two-disc set. 180 min. total. Widescreen (Enhanced); Soundtracks: English Dolby Digital 5.1, Spanish Dolby Digital stereo; Subtitles: English, Spanish, French; audio commentary; featurettes; deleted scenes; outtakes. **6 episodes on 2 discs. 180 min.** |

The eighth game in the MLB 2K series, MLB 2K10 celebrates the immortal battle on the baseball diamond between pitcher and batter. Featuring a combination of an extensive updating of features from earlier games in the series, alongside a range of new play options designed to heighten the experience of both the player on the mound and at the plate, MLB 2K10 is a baseball gaming experience not to be missed. Additional features include, new pitch selection and batter's swing functionality, multiple game modes including franchise and career modes and a variety of multiplayer options. .caption { font-family: Verdana, Helvetica neue, Arial, serif; font-size: 10px; font-weight: bold; font-style: italic; } ul.indent { list-style: inside disc; text-indent: -15px; } table.callout { font-family: verdana; font-size: 11px; line-height: 1. 3em; } td.vgoverview { height: 125px; background: #9DC4D8 url(http://images.amazon.com/images/G/01/electronics/detail-page/callout-bg.png) repeat-x; border-left: 1px solid #999999; border-right: 1px solid #999999; padding-left: 20px; padding-right: 20px; padding-bottom: 10px; width: 250px; font-family: verdana; font-size: 12px; } Raise your stats in the box with Batter's Eye technology . View larger. Dominate on the mound with improved via Insider Edge stats. View larger. Cue fielding and basepad actions. View larger. Multiple modes and gameplay options. View larger. Better Pitching Through Analytics As in the previous release in the MLB 2K series, pitching in MLB 2K10 requires a combination of analysis of scouting reports and hurling technique on the mound. Scouting reports are based on 2K Games' exclusive "Inside Edge" data service, which provides up-to-date information on AI representations of real batters across a wide range of data points. With this players can make an educated guess as to their best chances using particular pitches against a particular batter based on everything from the current count, whether it is a night or day game, to how far into the season it is. Pitching technique is centered around a gesture pitching mechanism, where in players deliver pitches through specific controller inputs using face buttons and/or the analog stick. With regards to this, the difference this time around is that in addition to these enacting inputs, MLB 2K10 incorporates a push button pitch selection system. Players must still input the correct series of gestures for the pitch they intend, which are more difficult for more complex pitches, but this new push button step also provides the game with precise information as to what pitch you intend to throw. With is extra information, which the game uses as a baseline for compiling analytics, players can see where their gestures for particular pitches are off, and correct them as need be. An Improved Hitting Experience with "Batter's Eye" Players' experience at the plate has also been improved in MLB 2K10 through a combination of data and new features. Just as with pitchers, batters have access to 2K Sports' "Insider Edge" data to help them make better decisions in specific game situations based on a variety of stats related to themselves if playing as a representative of a real MLB player, or the pitcher they face. But the new feature that completely changes the batters experience in "Batter's Eye." With this, highly skilled batters can get occasional, spilt second views of what the pitch is going to be. Used in conjunction with new batting functionality like defensive and contact swings, batters can potentially fend off pitches until the count is in their favor, and/or they are ready to make an educated guess at what the pitch is going to be and swing accordingly. As with the pitching analytics available in defensive positions, offensive players have access to a batting analyzer at the push of a button to figure out what they are doing wrong and right at the plate. Fielding and Baserunning Of course baseball isn't just about initial conflict between pitcher and hitter, so MLB 2K10 gives you all you need to finish the play from any place on the field. Fielding and baserunning in MLB 2K10 features easy controls and tons of great animations just as in earlier releases, but in this most recent version players can also now cue up the actions of their players while on defense, or from the basepads with simple controller inputs. In the case of fielders, once the defensive player is selected, simply press the face button for the appropriate base or cutoff man you want. Once your man makes the stop, he will throw to your chosen spot automatically. This is a big help, especially when trying to turn a quick double play, or in the case of a ball that makes it all the way to the wall. Cueing up the actions of base runners is just as easy. For example, in the event of a full count where you want to send your runners regardless of the pitch, or during a steal attempt, simply select your base runner(s) and use your game controller's trigger to set events in motion. If you change your mind you can just as easily send them scrambling back with a the same trigger. Key Game Features Total Control Pitching – Based on each pitcher’s mechanics and official scouting reports, Total Control Pitching lets you put the ball exactly where you want it–provided you keep a close eye on your pitch count. Total Control Hitting – With Total Control Hitting you can time your swing to hit for power, put the ball in play or take a defensive cut. Batter’s Eye uses a hitter’s real-life eye rating to help you identify fastballs, breaking balls and off speed pitches before they get to the plate. Play Like the Best – True-to-life player rating system, signature styles and a new motion model ensure every pitch, swing, catch, throw, steal and slide looks and feels like you’re at the ballpark. Updated Franchise Mode - Improve your team from the warm days of spring training to the chill of the October Classic, with the option to jump into online leagues whenever you choose. Become a Living Legend in My Player Mode – With My Player Mode you can create a player, choose your team and then play your way into the Hall of Fame. Hurry-Up Baseball - Skip all the cutscenes, animations, replays and commentary between plays with the push of a button, making for a quicker game. The correct fit for larger custom wheels has been written about in countless articles and on many web sites. Here is just a quick review. One inch larger diameter custom wheels with a lower profile tire are usually safe to use. This method is called Plus One. The Plus Two method consist of a custom wheel 2 inches larger in diameter along with a tire that is two inches lower in sidewall profile. Using the Plus One or Plus Two method will make your upgrade to larger custom correctly and in most cases the new custom wheels and tires will fit in the wheel well with out rubbing.
To stuff a slightly larger custom wheel and tire under your fender is not an impossible undertaking. So, what can be done if a bigger than normal custom wheel and tire rub slightly on the inner fender lip as you are turning a corner or with added weight from one or more passengers? The most popular way to make those cool big rims fit is to roll your inner fender lip either using a baseball bat or a professional fender roller.
The old school method of flatting the inner fender lip is as simple as using a baseball bat. This method has a higher probability of damage than a professional fender roller. However if done slowly and properly a bat will give you equal results. Typically the baseball bat is placed in between the tire and the fender, with the fat part of the bat on the tire. The handle of the bat is at the 6 o'clock position and is tilted to apply pressure to the inner fender lip. By pushing the bat down it act's like a lever to bend the lip up and out of the way. Use a hair dryer to soften up the paint around the inner fender lip so it wont crack.
A more practical way of rolling the inner fender lip up and out of the way of your tire is a professional fender roller tool. The fender roller tool is simply bolted onto the hub of your vehicle and a roller applies firm pressure against the inner lip of your fender. With the use of a hair dryer to soften the paint around the lip and a slight pressure in an arching motion, you can bend the lip up and out of the way slowly and much safer than a baseball bat. For about the cost of one new tire, you can purchase a professional fender roller.

Introducing Steve Grasse
After ten minutes with Ed Tettemer in the offices of the agency he founded with partner, Steve Red, you begin to understand the agency's passion for excellence. After an hour with Ed, you begin to understand the intensity of his personal passion. You begin to understand it but I have a feeling that, even after days and days of exposure to him, you probably wouldn't get the whole picture.
"Passion," the word, may seem descriptive of a complicated set of feelings and opinions. Oddly, in thinking about Ed Tettemer's passion for his agency and its clients, it seems rather simple. It's just that he wants everything to be excellent: excellent clients, excellent co-workers, excellent marketing solutions, excellent creative executions, excellent everything.
"Where'd you go to college, Ed?" (A question most interviewers ask without expecting surprises in the response.) "Never went to college. Dropped out of high school and never looked back. Got my college degree at the Elkman agency and my graduate degree at Earle Palmer Brown."
Maybe it's best to start at the beginning. Ed was born and raised and was "scared of the city," living in a rather parochial environment. His Father was a sheriff in Bucks County and his Mother worked as a secretary in the office of the small township where they lived. Theirs was a simple life, a good life in a small town atmosphere. He and his Dad fished a lot and they ate what they caught. The vegetables on their table came from their garden except for the mushrooms they harvested after heavy rains. It seemed to be an uncomplicated existence far from the pressures and tensions of traditional business, especially the advertising business.
Dad was pretty much occupied with his job and the politics of the community. Mom was more influential on the lives of Ed and his older brother. Neither parent made strong suggestions about what Ed and his brother did to prepare them for a career. They were good people and Mom, especially, influenced the way Ed has turned out. She was passionate about music and books. Ed is, too. She preached, "Keep your eyes and ears open." Ed tries to do that. All she wanted for her children was for them to be happy and she didn't try to control their every move. Today, Ed appreciates that.
His childhood was a happy one. He liked to fish. He played a lot of baseball. He was a fairly typical American kid. Then, when he was in high school, there was a dramatic change. It was called the Viet Nam War. Consistent with how many people felt at the time, his older brother took off for Canada to resist the war. That had severe, negative impact on life in peaceful Bucks County. Overnight, the Tettemer family became pariahs. Friends deserted them. The community changed its view of them. Church changed. Bad stuff!
Clearly, that situation had a powerful influence on Ed's psyche. He dropped out of high school and spent over three years hitch hiking all over the country. He found ways to make enough money to do a lot of both savory and unsavory things. He was a confused young man wandering the country during confusing times.
But he never lost touch with his Mother and Dad so, ultimately, he went home to Bucks County and found a job working as a glorified gopher for the Doylestown Intelligencer. He ran ads back and forth from the paper to its small, retail advertisers. He says, "I guess I was a junior account executive and didn't know it." He delivered ad proofs, started helping small stores with their ad copy and quickly learned how those small retailers did their newspaper advertising.
During the year at the paper, he got to know and got to be friendly with many of his customers. He realized that most of them didn't have a lot of confidence in the help they were getting from the paper. He believed that he could help them do better advertising, advertising that actually worked and could be tracked. He doesn't know why he believed that but he believed it.
He remembered Pete's Place in a rather nostalgic way. Pete's Place was a restaurant in Ottsville just north of Doylestown. Their ad always ran on the same page with other restaurants. All of the ads were the same size, were laid out in a conventional rectangle and had many of the same messages: good food, low prices, family atmosphere, etc.
Pete's Place was pretty much the same as a lot of places in that part of the country.
Except for one thing. Their logo and sign was a big wagon wheel.
After Ed convinced them to try to look different, their next ad was designed to be round. It stood out nicely on the page with all the rectangles. Someone once said that good advertising should zig when the competition's zags. While Ed didn't refer to that specific quote during our interview, much of what he said about Pete's Place and about Red Tettemer's work seems to support that "Zig if they Zag"idea. Ed reflects, "I think I made six bucks on the work I did for Pete's."
The result? He worked with mostly small retailers for four years and developed a keen understanding of how the retailer thinks and of what it takes to motivate consumers to respond to advertising and promotion. In his own words, "I guess I didn't really know what I was doing but I liked my clients, worked hard and made a decent living."
Marriage followed as did a move into Center City where he, wife Lyn and daughter Jessie still live. His first job in the city was with the old Elkman Agency where he claims to have started "Knowing nothing." His boss, Creative Director Jim Block, promised to make him into a copy writer and further promised that he would like doing it. Jim did what he promised and Ed did like it. He had five productive years there but was always the junior writer. He needed more.
Off to Becker/Kanter (now Panzano & Partners,) he soon learned the logic of focusing on vertical businesses. He was a senior creative director there working almost exclusively on shopping center advertising and promotion. The "vertical" idea had great influence on him in the early days of Red Tettemer when they spent most of their effort with cable TV and entertainment accounts.
He was recruited to Earle Palmer Brown where three factors influenced his thinking and his behavior. First, Brian Meridith, then the head of creative at EPB, showed him how important it was to have a good idea at the beginning of creative execution. "What's the idea? What's the idea?" was hammered into his consciousness. Second, he formed a new perspective about "vertical." While it's valuable and, at times, necessary, to focus on specific industries, it's also valuable and stimulating to have a broader base. Today's Red Tettemer is definitely broad based and probably always will be.
The third factor was, perhaps, the most important. In early 1992, Ed just didn't know what to do with his career and his growing, positive reputation. "I was disillusioned.
I just didn't believe in the people I worked for."
Fortunately, he was allowed to do some free lance work and frequently collaborated with Steve Red with whom he had a marvelous working relationship. He got a call from Steve about working with him on several large assignments. His copy, Steve's design skills and their ability to work together so effectively brought out his assertion, "I had the time of my life working with Steve."
It took Ed three years to convince Steve to join with him to form Red Tettemer in 1996.
They live by their mission statement, "Energize our clients and their businesses." Ed is proud when he reports that they try hard to make their clients' competitors envious. They've followed those convictions while moving from "vertical" client groups into more general accounts. Some of their recent acquisitions are SEPTA, University of Pennsylvania Health System and Hatfield Meats.
Neither Ed nor Steve has much tolerance for the traditional approach used by many agencies. So, they've successfully created a fun environment. Their office space is designed in creative ways. The décor is imaginative but comfortable. There are surprises everywhere: a conference room with no conference table, eclectic art work all over the walls, small nooks and crannies with interesting appointments and two balconies which allow for panoramic views of the City. The physical experience of the offices is sure to be pleasant and entertaining for every age group: traditionalists as well as employees, whose average age is under thirty.
What's the smartest business decision you ever made, Ed? Instantly, the response is,
"Being in partnership with Steve Red. In fact, that may be my best life decision."
How about your worst decision? "I waited too long to expand from our "vertical" focus.
also, I think I've been too reclusive." (Maybe this article will help, Ed.)
Fun for Ed? Trying to understand client needs and finding solutions. Cooking. Reading. Joining the fire company near his beach home. Remarking that he thinks he made his Mother and Father proud. Red Tettemer's annual retreat. Family. Many things.
One more question, Ed. "What would you do with a couple of wishes?"
Thoughtfully, he responds in a way that further demonstrates his passion. He says that he'd like to keep in closer touch with all of his employees, that he wishes he could reenergize the agency more frequently and that he'd like to take time to celebrate their good fortune more frequently.
If life is dull, if you need a shot of passion in your life, if you'd enjoy being stimulated by the innards of an ad agency, if you respond to another person's motivation and, yes, passion, visit Red Tettemer. While you're there, try to spend a few minutes with Ed. As his Mother taught him, "Keep your eyes and ears open." You'll enjoy the visit.
