Melody Time (Disney Gold Classic Collection) List Price: $19.99 Sale Price: $9.96 |
|
In the grand tradition of Disney's greatest musical classics such as FANTASIA, MELODY TIME features seven classic stories, each enhanced with high-spirited music and unforgettable characters! Donald Duck -- an all-time Disney favorite -- puts on a display of jazzy antics as the star of "Blame It On The Samba." Music becomes a real adventure for a busy bumble bee in "Bumble Boogie." From the mischievous young tugboat in "Little Toot," to the heroes of legend and myth in "Johnny Appleseed" and "Pecos Bill," this feast for the eyes and ears entertains with wit and charm. A timeless addition to your video collection, MELODY TIME is a delightful Disney classic with something for everyone in your family!Product Measures: 0.61" x 5.34" x 7.5" This is another collection of Disney shorts set to music, but this time the formula works. That's predicated on the inherent strength of the individual pieces and almost all of them come through. Surprisingly, two American folk heroes, Johnny Appleseed and Pecos Bill, are the stars of this show, with rousty little tunes, humor, and compelling linear story lines (a rarity in most of these shorts). Even the shorts that are weak in one area, thematically or musically, make up for it in another. There's very little of the Disney animators attempting to be 1940s modern, thank goodness, and there's a sterling quality in the depth of the art work. A definite plus to an animation (or Disney) collection. --Keith Simanton |

Schoolhouse Rock! - America Rock [VHS] List Price: $14.99 Sale Price: $15.67 |
|
Once upon a time kids learned many of their school lessons in the three-minute episodes of Schoolhouse Rock. These educational cartoons came on during the commercial breaks of the less-than-edifying Saturday morning fare in the 1970s, and despite their healthy content, kids stayed glued to the screen to sing along to the somewhat psychedelic cartoons. Countless children hummed their way through social studies. The Preamble to the Constitution is much easier to remember when it's set to music. And everyone who saw the cartoon remembers how a bill becomes a law ("Oh, I'm just a bill, a lonely old bill, sitting here on Capitol Hill"). These and eight other shorts make up America Rock, a 30-minute program that will stir patriotism and teach kids a bit of history. Whether you're an adult who remembers fondly his Schoolhouse Rock days or a parent trying to help a child with school, this selection will have you singing that "knowledge is power." A bonus cartoon of "My Hero Zero," performed by the Lemonheads, is included at the end. --Jenny Brown |

Disney's American Legends: Paul Bunyan, John Henry, Johnny Appleseed, The Brave Engineer [VHS] List Price: $14.99 Sale Price: $13.06 |
|
American history and pioneer mythology blur in this collection of animated Disney shorts hosted by James Earl Jones. From Disney's Golden Age come the marvelous Johnny Appleseed (1948), a fanciful, folksy, story-song tale of the real-life planter who seeded the Midwest, and The Brave Engineer (1950), a screwball version of "The Ballad of Casey Jones." Paul Bunyan (1958) is pure tall tale turned energetic American myth: the giant lumberjack is a homespun Zeus in flannel and logger boots creating the mountains and valleys of the American West with his big, blue ox, Babe. Joining these classics is Disney's stylized new take on the folk song John Henry (2000), narrated by Alfre Woodard. The sketchy, roughed-up style echoes Jacob Lawrence in moments, and the rich soundtrack soars with spiritual-influenced music. Like the best of Disney, these spirited folk tales speak to both children and adults. --Sean Axmaker |

View larger. Versatile, User-Friendly Design A sharp blade makes it easier to get work done quickly and safely. The innovative AccuSharp Knife Sharpener lets you sharpen most blades in around ten seconds. Sharpening is oil- and mess-free, and it doesn't require guessing at angles or handling rough, awkward stones. This sharpener's easy-to-use design makes it a great tool to have on hand in professional and personal kitchens, as well as an easy choice for hunters, fishermen and women, gardeners, and craftspeople. Featuring a unique, ergonomic handle, the AccuSharp fits neatly in either hand to accommodate both right- and left-handed users, and it includes a full-length guard that protects your fingers throughout the sharpening process. Fast, Effective Sharpening To get started sharpening, you simply place your knife on a table or counter top with the cutting edge up. Hold the knife handle securely with one hand. Then let the "V" notch on the sharpener straddle the blade, and use your thumb to apply light pressure as you draw the AccuSharp down past the point of the blade. When you first use the AccuSharp on a blade, several passes may be required to make sure that your knife's cutting angle conforms to the AccuSharp angle. But once that angle is achieved the first time, it should take just two or three brief passes to put a sharp edge back on your knife--which means that sharpening fits into your busy schedule instead of interfering with it. Dependable, Long-Lasting Construction To deliver years of reliable use, AccuSharp sharpening blades are crafted from diamond-honed tungsten carbide, one of the hardest known materials. And because even the toughest industrial-quality blades eventually begin to show wear, AccuSharp's unique design allows you to reverse the blade to double its life span. Most users report an average of five to 10 years between blade replacements, which means that it's easy to ensure that your sharpener will be ready to go when you need it. AccuSharp Knife Sharpeners will not rust, and they can be cleaned easily with soap and water or in your dishwasher. What's in the Box AccuSharp 001 Knife Sharpener |

Captain America: The First Avenger (Two-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo + Digital Copy) List Price: $44.99 Sale Price: $23.95 |
|
Declared unfit for military service during World War II, scrawny Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) gets a chance to serve his country when he undergoes a procedure that transforms him into the ultimate super soldier: Captain America. Armed with his indestructible shield, Cap must defeat the Red Skull (Hugo Weaving), a Nazi scientist who hatches his own plan to take over the world with the help of a powerful cosmic artifact. Tommy Lee Jones, Hayley Atwell, Stanley Tucci co-star in this exciting actioner, based on the Marvel Comics icon. 123 min. Widescreen; Soundtracks: English DTS HD 7.1 Master Audio, DVS, French Dolby Digital 5.1, Spanish Dolby Digital 5.1, Portuguese Dolby Digital 5.1; Subtitles: English (SDH), French, Spanish, Portuguese; audio commentary; featurettes; deleted scenes; bonus short "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Thor's Hammer" (2011); bonus digital copy. Also includes a DVD version of the film. Two-disc set. The Marvel Comics superhero Captain America was born of World War II, so if you're going to do the origin story in a movie you'd better set it in the 1940s. But how, then, to reconcile that hero with the 21st-century mega-blockbuster The Avengers, a 2012 summit meeting of the Marvel giants, where Captain America joins Iron Man and the Incredible Hulk and other super pals? Stick around, and we'll get to that. In 1943, a sawed-off (but gung-ho) military reject named Steve Rogers is enlisted in a super-secret experiment masterminded by adorable scientist Stanley Tucci and skeptical military bigwig Tommy Lee Jones. Rogers emerges, taller and sporting greatly expanded pectoral muscles, along with a keen ability to bounce back from injury. In both sections Rogers is played by Chris Evans, whose sly humor makes him a good choice for the otherwise stalwart Cap. (Benjamin Button-esque effects create the shrinky Rogers, with Evans's head attached.) The film comes up with a viable explanation for the red-white-and-blue suit 'n' shield--Rogers is initially trotted out as a war bonds fundraiser, in costume--and a rousing first combat mission for our hero, who finally gets fed up with being a poster boy. Director Joe Johnston (The Wolfman) makes a lot of pretty pictures along the way, although the war action goes generic for a while and the climax feels a little rushed. Kudos to Hugo Weaving, who makes his Nazi villain a grand adversary (with, if the ear doesn't lie, an imitation of Werner Herzog's accent). If most of the movie is enjoyable, the final 15 minutes or so reveals a curious weakness in the overall design: because Captain America needs to pop up in The Avengers, the resolution of the 1943 story line must include a bridge to the 21st century, which makes for some tortured (and unsatisfying) plot developments. Nevertheless: that shield is really cool. --Robert Horton |

--Robert Horton Declared unfit for military service during World War II, scrawny Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) gets a chance to serve his country when he undergoes a procedure that transforms him into the ultimate super soldier: Captain America. 123 min. The Hero in My Life
Someone once said
“Whether I become the hero of my life, I do not know.”
I do not know.
I mean I never played in the NBA or any profession sport for that matter.
I never stared in a movie, sang on American Idol, or danced my way to fame.
I have never saved anyone from a burning building or rescued anyone from drowning.
I have never even been asked for my autograph. In fact there aren’t a whole lot of people I hang out with.
Have I become the hero of my life? I do not know.
I do remember when I was a child my parents taking in a young lady who was going through serious problems in life. I remember crying for that lady all night. I don’t know why, but I did. She never knew that I did. But that doesn’t make me a hero.
I remember back in high school stopping some bullies from picking on a little boy. I remember the boy coming up to me later and thanking me. He didn’t call me “hero” though.
I remember buying a pair of shoes when I was in college. When I got back to my dorm I noticed the man had given me $5 too much in change. I remember sending it back. He sent me a pair of socks and a nice note. But he didn’t say I was a hero.
I remember visiting a friend who worked at an elementary school. While sitting in the office waiting to see him, a 12 year old boy sat next to me. He was sent to the office for bad behavior. I remember talking to this boy, encouraging him to do better.
I remember receiving a letter from this same boy 20 years later thanking me for my encouraging words and how they made a difference in his life. But he never called me a hero
I remember while visiting a nursing home for the elderly seeing an old lady sitting in a wheel chair with her head resting in her hand. I remember her crying, looking lonely. I remember sitting down and talking to that lady. I also remember her smile when I left a half hour later. But she didn’t call me a hero.
I remember seeing a man lying on the side of the rode on my way to a business meeting. He was drunk. I remember a few cars in front of me passing him by. I remember I stopped, called in for help and waiting until the police came to pick him up. The man never called me a hero. In fact the man never ever woke up while I was there.
I remember a lot of things other people will never know. Only I.
Have I become the hero of my life? Maybe not to other people, but you know what? To me I have. And you know something else? That’s all that really matters. That’s all that really matters to me.
Knowing I try to do the right thing for not only myself but for other people as well is good enough for me. In fact it’s more than good enough.
It’s natural high that no one, NO ONE, can ever take away. No One!
It is the Ultimate Question when you want to know where your values lie; when you really want to know just what kind of person you are not based on what other people think, but based on who you really are; based on things people never see. Become the hero of your lfe before you can think about becoming the hero in someone elses. It's never to late to start.

What is the 'Salute to American hero' stuff all about at the Shamu Show?
I was recently at the Shamu show in Florida and before the show there was a request for members of the armed forces to stand up so people could cheer for them. Yes, I understand it was an armed force thing, but what was the relevance to jumping killer whales?
Maybe it is because I am British and we don't really go for great shows of patriotism, but I felt a little uncomfortable with it all.
I went there last summer, and I totally know how you feel! On one hand, it's really quite sweet, but on the other, it's random and a bit weird (and irrelevant to whales).
Bob Moses, American hero, giant of civil rights movement, to speak Thursday in Watkins
Anyone who knows anything about the man knows that Bob Moses is a genuine American hero. Not one of the reality TV heroes, but the real deal, a man who stood up in the face of racist terror and fought for freedom. Freedom not just for himself, not just for black Americans, but for all Americans who value truth and justice.
