The standard mode lets you perform common math as well as operations involving the time value of money--that is, applications such as mortgages or annuities in which payments are equal and evenly spaced. You can also perform trigonometric functions in standard mode. The more hard-core worksheet mode includes tables for amortization, bond, depreciation, and compound interest. If you're not familiar with such calculations, the very helpful user's manual will guide you through the process. All previous worksheet values are stored in memory, so you don't have to retype all the bond maturity or cash flow analysis figures. The average user who wants to calculate a basic loan payment will be more comfortable working in the standard calculator mode. Texas Instruments Instruments TI-30XIIS Solar Scientific Calculator TI-30XIIS Calculators

There are many inexpensive scientific calculators on the market, but few boast the two-line display and other advanced features users get with the TI-30x IIS. The display shows the equation you are creating on the top line, and the numbers or symbols you are currently entering on the second line. Once the equation is solved, the results are displayed on the second line, and you can use the four arrow keys on the front of the calculator to edit the original equation in any way you like for a recalculation. Better still, pressing the up arrow repeatedly lets you browse through a cache of dozens of previous calculations, meaning you can look back to see the answer to a problem you solved two minutes ago, two days ago, or whenever. The device uses solar power when possible but can fall back on the internal batteries (which are included) if there isn't enough light. The buttons wiggle around a little too much and require a firm keystroke to register input, but the fact that input can be followed by looking at the output on the first line helps to cut down on mistakes. There is a shift key that doubles the functions of most buttons, and although the TI-30X IIS isn't festooned with as many buttons or functions as some other calculators we've tested in this price range, it's still very capable. There are three angle modes (degrees, radians, and grads), scientific and engineering notation modes, and even one- or two-variable statistical modes. Five variables can also be assigned to their own memory slots. The documentation is lacking, as everything is presented on a single folded sheet of paper, but Texas Instruments did manage to pack several illustrated examples on the page. The calculator comes with a snap-on cover that fits on the back of the device when you are using it. The calculator carries a one-year limited warranty. --T. Byrl Baker Pros: Two-line display Relatively inexpensive Handles one- and two-variable statistical calculations Cons: Weak documentation Buttons wiggle a bit too much

The new two-line TI-30X IIS with the memory retention feature retains previous entries, memory values, and individual statistical elements, and is a great value for general math, algebra, trigonometry, statistics, science, and much more. It allows you to enter, delete, insert, and edit individual statistical data elements, and displays trigonometric functions in degrees and radians. It performs common and natural logarithms, fractions and fraction/decimal conversions, and degrees, minutes, seconds/decimal degrees conversions. The calculator features durable plastic keys and a protective cover, with a quick reference card and guide for easy assistance.

Advanced Math

What is the purpose of going to school? Most people would respond with something along the lines of getting a good education so you can become a responsible adult who works and contributes to society. While there is nothing wrong with that result, is it really the main reason to go to school? What about learning how to learn, critical thinking, analyzing and forensics (the art or study of argumentation and formal debate)? Our schools do not focus on these skills! Their focus is on the end result. Why? Would you build a house without first building the foundation? Of course you wouldn't! We commonly refer to that as "putting the cart before the horse." Here are some examples of this problem.

The most common approach to teaching children to read today is the "see and say" method. This actually isn't reading at all. It is memorizing that a certain group of letters arranged in a certain order is this particular word. The children are not taught that letters represent sounds, so it would be pointless to ask them to try to sound out a new word. They are expected to guess what a word might be! What frequently happens is the child says nothing because he doesn't want to look foolish in front of his friends. After a few seconds of silence the teacher tells him what the word is. What the child actually learns is that, if he waits long enough, someone else will give him the answer. This system was developed because some genius (I'm being facetious) observed that adults read too quickly to be sounding out the words. Obviously, they were reading by whole word recognition. Our genius then waged a campaign to teach every child to read using the whole word method. I guess it was too much to consider that an adult might have already read thousands of books, magazines and newspapers.

Do you suppose he might have seen enough written words to recognize most of them on sight, thus eliminating the need to sound them out? Reading is an aural exercise. Why are our schools not teaching the forty-four sounds of our language first, followed by the letter combinations that make up those sounds, and finally the seventy-two rules that govern reading? A common argument against this method of teaching is that our language has too many words that do not follow the rules. The truth is that the rules apply to approximately 85% of our words. The average first grade student has a vocabulary of about 20,000 words. Would you prefer that your child enter second grade being able to read 17,000 of those words or only the 850 words contained in most first year reading text books? The whole word guessing game simply does not work! We cannot teach results. There is a natural progression from basic skills to experienced practitioner. It is no wonder that so many children have no interest in reading.

Writing is barely even talked about in our schools anymore. The common thinking is that with today's technology, it isn't important. Our computers can check our spelling and grammar. Wood ewe bee happy two sea you're sun right this way? Spell check doesn't have a problem with the previous sentence. The fact is writing goes hand in hand with reading. The two subjects should be taught together. The act of writing words that one is learning to read helps reinforce the rules that he is being taught. As for using computers, I am not a big fan. I know that children need to become competent at using them, but I think it is better to first learn how to read and write. A young friend of mine grew up using his computer for everything. His computer skills and his understanding of math are incredible. However, he does not read. Consequently, his working vocabulary and his overall vocabulary are virtually identical, and he struggles with effective communication. When he has to write papers for his college courses, he needs to have someone else proofread them and make suggestions on better ways to express his thoughts and ideas. I find that very sad. Our school system failed him.

Let's look at arithmetic. When I was in seventh grade my math class was part of the test group for a new program called Modern Math. The tracking system was still in use at that time, so everyone in the class was an "A" or "B" student. This class was a breeze for us. After two years with remarkable results the experts declared the program was a success. Then, in typical fashion, they put the cart before the horse and started teaching the new math to first graders. The class was easy for my class because we didn't have to learn basic arithmetic. We already knew it. Why would you try to teach set theory or different base number systems to a child who barely knows how to count to a hundred. Children must be taught basic arithmetic first, without calculators or computers! Most people will not use advanced math in their careers, but everyone uses basic arithmetic on a daily basis. They should not have to stop and think that 6 x 8 = 48. It should be an automatic response, but it won't be if our schools do not cease their current practices.

These are merely the three most basic skills that our public school system is not teaching properly. Without these skills how can our children learn anything more advanced? Where are they going to find the information they need to make intelligent choices. How can they learn to think critically or to analyze data. Will they be able debate the different sides to any given issue? Will they even understand the concept and the consequences of "putting the cart before the horse"?

Advanced Algebra not for Every Kid

In December, the Ohio Legislature approved a new "core curriculum" that today's Ohio fifth-graders will have to successfully complete in order to graduate from high school. Beginning in 2010, students will be required to pass four years of mathematics, which must include both basic and advanced algebra. Ohio's action mirrors similar legislation the state of Michigan enacted last March.

Currently, only a handful of states mandate that all students pass two years of algebra to graduate from high school, but more states are considering such a requirement. There are only two justifications for a state to require that a graduating high school student master a particular subject - it is of vital interest to the student, society, or both.

Please reminisce for a moment and recall the last time you found that it was in your self-interest to be able to apply the quadratic formula. You know, the one in which the opposite of the coefficient of the first-degree term added to, or subtracted from, the square root of four times the product of the coefficient of the second-degree term and the constant is subtracted from the square of the coefficient of the first-degree term - all of which is divided by twice the coefficient of the second-degree term.

If you are an algebra teacher, algebra student or algebra parent, making use of the quadratic formula may have been a recent experience for you, but my guess is that for just about everybody else it was when you took your last algebra test - or never.

Of course, no reasonable person can doubt the vital importance that mathematics has played in the advancement of societies. Without math there is no chemistry, physics or astronomy, and no Internet or HDTV either.

Nevertheless, as important as the benefits of the science of mathematics are to everyone, the fact of the matter is that most people can, do and will continue to lead very productive lives without having mastered algebra's algorithms.

An unspoken truth is that not all students who enter high school have the intellectual capacity to be successful in second-year algebra. However, this is an addressable problem. The solution is to apply the same formula that school districts used when they started requiring geometry. "Dummy down" the course as needed.

This approach, however, presents a dilemma for another group of "more algebra" advocates who argue that the primary reason for requiring algebra is not for students to gain familiarity with polynomials, functions, equations, etc. as much as it is for students to internalize the "thinking" required to reach this comfort level.

The argument is that the thought process required to solve simultaneous equations is transferable to real world problems. The extent to which this is true is debatable. What is not debatable, in my view, is that in order to offer a second-year algebra course that every student in the school can pass will require replacing a lot of those thinking experiences with "extra credit" journals and scrapbooks.

Such a universalization of "advanced" algebra will, unintentionally, negate the only real value of the course for the vast majority of high school students - most colleges require it. A student's high school math record is used by universities as a major tool to gauge a prospective student's capability to learn at the college level.

The assumption being, of course, that a student who successfully completes advanced math courses is a better risk than one who doesn't. Advanced math courses are considered good filters, but if algebra II becomes a required subject, universities will properly consider it "basic" rather than "advanced," and, consequently, a student's performance in the course will be no more useful to colleges as a gauge than any other required course.

So, the remaining question is how essential to our society is an algebra-literate citizenry? Would we be more secure? More prosperous? If requiring a second year of algebra in high school translated into a new generation of math scientists comprised of those who otherwise would be flipping burgers, that obviously would be a societal gain. But that is no more realistic than requiring every kid in high school to play football with the expectation of developing masses of otherwise undiscovered pros for the NFL.

can i take an advanced math in community college, while im still schooling?

homeschooling, and i only need 2 more required classes to go to a university,

which is english 4, and an advanced math,
the program doesn't have a math higher than algebra 2,

can i just go to a community college, and study pre calc or something? while im still homeschooling?

Absolutely. Most homeschooled kids do.

Rather than doing a dual enrollment, it is in your best interests for your parents to "graduate" you. Dual enrolled high school students are at the bottom of the list for classes....they only get classes if there are open slots after all the college students have enrolled. College freshmen, OTOH, have a better chance of getting into the classes of their choice.

All the best.
